Lady Demons reset for matchup with New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS – It is not easy to win on the road.

Northwestern State found that to be true Thursday at Southeastern having its three-game conference winning streak snapped, as it was unable to fully recover from the many missed chances in the first half due to a string of turnovers.

The task doesn't get any easier as the Lady Demons (7-9, 3-3) head to The Big Easy on Saturday to face a New Orleans that may be starting to figure things out.

Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. on from the banks of Lake Pontchartrain and can be seen on ESPN+. Free live streaming audio is also available at www.nsudemons.com/watch.

Despite the less-than-optimal first half offensively, NSU still found its way into a single-digit game on multiple occasions in the second half. It was unable to put together a run good enough to fully eliminate the deficit.

Southeastern's play around the basket and in the paint proved to be the weak spot and kept any runs from happening for the Demons in the loss. NSU was outscored 40-20 in the paint on the night.

"We have continue to correct ourselves," head coach Anna Nimz said. "We missed our opportunity to shoot 21 times due to turnovers. We must continue to work to tighten up our turnovers and hard attack the boards.

"Even with those missed opportunities, we were never out of the game. I was definitely proud of their third quarter and the ability to chip away. We have to own our mistakes, commit to correcting them and move forward. Focus on the next, which is a very good UNO team."

The Privateers are coming off one of their better performances of the seasons, holding the lead over conference unbeaten Texas A&M-Commerce for more than 34 minutes of the game, including a 15-point advantage in the first half.

UNO saw the lead disappear and Commerce go ahead for good to win the game 74-69 with less than a minute to go as the Privateers finished the night 0-for-6 from the field and did not score in the final four minutes of the game.

Prior to the cold spell that ended the game, UNO created open look after open look with their ball movement. It had a season-best 20 assists in the game on 26 made field goals. Minnesota transfer Justice Ross led the way with seven helpers along with a career-high 13 points.

The Lady Demons won the game in convincing fashion a year ago in New Orleans, getting a 15-point outing from Candice Parramore and forcing 26 turnovers, the most in a game against a conference opponent on the year.

The Privateers got the last laugh however by beating NSU in Natchitoches and then again when the two met in the Southland Conference Tournament.

Parramore will certainly play a key role in the game once again against a physical UNO team as she eyes the 1,000 point career milestone. She needs 17 to reach the prestigious mark, but the Lady Demons will need a team effort to earn a winning record on this three-game road swing.

"We have to continue to grow together," Nimz said. "It's not one person's job to score all the points or get all the rebounds. Just continuing to grow together and understanding it's a team sport and it's got to be a team effort and always has to be we over me."
