SAN ANTONIO – It was a day full of sweeps for Northwestern State on Monday.
Hours after
Breanna Burrell and
Symone Wesley took home both Southland Conference Player of the Week honors, the Lady Demons (10-5, 3-1) finished off a three-match conference road stretch with a 3-0 record in a 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-22) sweep at UIW.
"I'm very happy with the win," head coach
Sean Kiracofe said. "When you have a big win like Saturday it's common to have a letdown match the next time out, but we avoided that. We weren't as sharp as we were in those last two sets against McNeese, but really focused in at the end of each set to close them out."
NSU found success early in the match from essentially any attack point. Setter
Amina Attra spread the ball around collecting six kills each from the outsides and the middles, with each hitter finishing their part on nearly every set.
The Lady Demons hit a match-best .333 in the opening set, including getting a .474 attack rate from the trio Burrell,
Reaghan Thompson and
Jordan Gamble. Four different 3-0 bursts of scoring in the first set propelled NSU to the 25-20 win.
After playing from behind for most of the second set, alternating five-point swings saw NSU take a late lead and see that lead go back to the hands of UIW at 21-19.
The late-set focus that has been with the Demons for the past two weeks took hold again as NSU went on a 5-0 run to flip the lead again, benefiting from a trio of Cardinal errors and an important block from
Addison McDermott and Gamble to earn set point.
The freshman middle finished the set with her seventh kill of the night two serves later to give NSU the 2-0 match lead.
Gamble and Thompson combined for 15 kills from the position to go along with their five combined blocks, providing the perfect complement to the outside attacking of Burrell and Wesley on the night.
"Jordan and Reaghan really played well," Kiracofe said. "With Symone and Brea playing the way they have it's not unexpected for teams to focus their defense against them, but that's a mistake. If you give either Jordan or Reaghan opportunities, they're going to take advantage of it."
As UIW adjusted to try and slow the production from the middle, the door was left open on the outside for Wesley.
After just two kills in the first two sets, the reigning defensive player of the week put her offensive abilities on display in the third set with five kills on 13 error-free swings, while maintaining her 4.7 digs per set average for the night.
Her fifth kill of the set gave NSU a 22-19 lead and after earning match point on a McDermott kill a few serves later, Gamble finished the third like she finished the second giving NSU its second sweep of the day.
Burrell finished the night with 12 kills, reaching double figures in the category for the seventh straight match. Wesley tallied 14 digs to lead all players and Thompson improved her conference-leading attack percentage with six kills on 10 error-free attempts.
NSU returns to Prather Coliseum for the conference home opener on Thursday night against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
