Lady Demons take on Sooners

11/29/2022 11:00:00 AM

NORMAN, Okla. – Northwestern State got multiple wins in its most recent game against Arkansas Baptist.

Of course, the larger number in the points column was the most important win from the day, but the Lady Demons (2-3) also had one of their most efficient offensive performances of the season and saw multiple players gain confidence in their offensive skill.

"We are coming off a 20-assist game," head coach Anna Nimz said. "That's not something that's easy to do in our dibble-drive offense. I'm looking forward to seeing them grow in their confidence to shoot, share and score from that game."

Maintaining confidence in the shot is one primary focuses for NSU as it enters its final Power 5 matchup of the season at Oklahoma, a team brimming with confidence in their own right even after a misstep two weeks ago in its only loss of the season at a ranked Utah team.

Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. from the Lloyd Nobel Center and can be seen on ESPN+. A live audio feed will also be available at www.nsudemons.com/watch with Tyler Moody providing play-by-play coverage.

Carrying over the offensive confidence serves as just one of the primary goals for NSU as it continues to refine play with the basketball, including a further decrease in the turnover category.

After two consecutive games with more than 27 turnovers, the Lady Demons had 17 against Arkansas Baptist, the second fewest in a game this year. In the two best quarters of the Arkansas Baptist game, the first and third where NSU scored a combined 44 points, it had just six turnovers. Only three of those fell into the unforced turnover category.

"We want to continue to tighten up our turnover count," Nimz said. "Make the extra pass and celebrate one another. Our offensive speed and philosophy will always open up more opportunities for turnovers, but we need to get our number down."

The Lady Demons will face a team that thrives on the extra pass to create open looks for their shooters.

The Sooners are third in the country in assists per game at 21.5 and have six players averaging 2.0 or more assists per game. The ball movement and open looks, for a quality shooting team, have created a top five ranked offense putting in more than 90 points per game.

OU is the third team this year the Lady Demons will face that average 90 or more points at the time of the game – LSU (111.0) and Oklahoma State (95.0).

"Oklahoma is a tremendous passing and shooting team," Nimz said. "One through 15, they can all do both. I hope our girls recognize their desire to hunt for the 3-ball around the perimeter. They want the shot and believe it's going in every single time. We truly have great shooters too. We just need to hunt the ball with more confidence."
