NATCHITOCHES – The opponent may be wildly different for Northwestern State in their return to play Saturday, but the focus heading in remains the same.
"Over the next couple of weeks our main focus will be us," head coach
Anna Nimz said. "And part of that is our need to clean things up on the offensive end. We must learn to value the ball and every possession 100 percent better. It was encouraging to see the girls manage the clock and execute with poise down the stretch against LSU."
The Lady Demons (1-3) host NAIA-foe Arkansas Baptist on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Prather Coliseum, less than a week after facing one of the top team in the country No. 15 LSU.
The game will air live on ESPN+ with Tyler Moody providing play-by-play commentary. Tickets for the game are available at www.nsutickets.com.
The biggest foe in the Lady Demons' way the past two games has really been the Lady Demons. More than a handful of unforced turnovers have led to minus-9 or greater turnover margins and nearly 30 points per game from those turnovers.
Time will help wash those unforced mistakes away and the crisp execution the Lady Demons have produced in more and more spurts, even during those turnover-riddled games, will happen with more and more frequency.
That is evidenced by the range of scoring leaders the Demons have produced so far this year.
When the offense is clicking, it has many options, which has led to four different leading scorers in each of the first four games of the season.
Jiselle Woodson was the latest to lead the effort with her 15 off the bench against the Tigers.
She got hot in the second quarter and produced nine of her 15 within the span of five minutes and joined
Shelby Rayner who led the team off the bench against LeTourneau.
Candice Parramore (15) did so against Oklahoma State and
Karmelah Dean (11) did it, leading four players in double figures, against Southern.
All are prime candidates to take the lead again on Saturday against Arkansas Baptist as the Lady Demons look to get back into the win column. The Lady Demons currently have seven players shooting better than 33 percent from the floor on the season and four players above 40 percent.
The shooting, the execution and in turn the clean play on the weekend all come from the time the Lady Demons put into their preparation on the afternoon weekdays in practice.
"We have to approach every game with the same fight," Nimz said. "That approach is developed and refined in practice. So, we have to come into every practice with the same mindset and, in some ways, treat practice just like a game."
