Heated exchange between Lady Demons, Houston Baptist ends in draw

NATCHITOCHES – A white-knuckle, fast-paced double overtime affair for the Northwestern State soccer team on Friday evening concluded in a 1-1 draw.

With a chance to win the match, two shots for Houston Baptist (1-7-3, 1-2-2 SLC) in overtime were denied by the NSU crossbar, preserving the even score for the Lady Demons as time expired.

In the 81st minute, sophomore midfielder Delaney Wells dropped in the match-tying goal for NSU (4-4-3, 4-4-1 SLC) off of a shared assist from a free kick by junior defender Jayme Haynes, which was found and served up to Wells from senior midfielder Kalee Williams.

Wells has contributed either a goal or an assist to the score sheets in four of the Lady Demons' last five matches.

"Obviously, her goal was big for us tonight," head coach Stuart Gore said. "Kalee being able to find her late was a great read and shows how they were able to keep their composure and stay on the gas pedal in the final minutes."

Since Sept. 17th at Incarnate Word, Williams has had four assists in as many matches, including a two-assist outing in a 4-0 rout at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

Gore sees the value in Williams' aggressive play style and explained the difficulties opponents have in matching up with her.

"I think as a player when you go up against Kalee, you just know you're going to get everything all the time, and it can be difficult for them to deal with," Gore said.

"Sometimes, she doesn't give you a break. In boxing terms, she can be a lot like Canelo Alvarez. She's just on top of you wailing away, and in your face and there's just no slowing her down."

Wells' goal galvanized the Lady Demons' efforts in the final minutes of regulation, leading to five more shots fired toward the HBU net, none of which proved to be threatening.

"(In our meeting after the match) the team was looking back on the last five to ten minutes (of the second period) and wondering how we didn't score," Gore said. "To be fair the final whistle came as a break to them. We kind of just ran out of time there down the stretch."

The Huskies took an early lead, finding the back of the net at high right off the foot of midfielder Mia Salas in the 13th minute. HBU threatened a second shortly after, when in the 15th minute a shot which floated just in front of an exposed NSU net was warded off by Williams.

The Lady Demons took a blistering 26 shots at HBU, ten of which were shots on goal. HBU keeper Karla Ramirez finished the evening with eight saves.

The Lady Demons return to action on Oct. 8 at Nicholls.
