NACOGDOCHES, Texas – JaCorious Jeter posted the 11th-best long jump in the nation this spring and Kelsey Frank reasserted her dominance in the women's javelin in the Southland Conference rankings to provide Northwestern State's top performances Friday on the opening day of the SFA Carl Kight Invitational track and field meet.
Jeter, a senior, met his pre-meet goal with the first 25-foot mark of his career, soaring 25-4 ½ to win. Teammate
Markeit Steverson Jr. was second at 24-6 ½. They stand 1-2 in the Southland rankings at the middle of the season.
Frank, a senior who redshirted last season after winning the 2017 Southland championship, led four Lady Demons atop the javelin competition. Her winning 154-7 throw trails only her 156-4 last week at the Texas Relays in the Southland standings.
Lady Demons
Amber Bruce (140-2 ½),
Summer Thomas (125-9) and
Sabrina Thiels (124-10) finished 2-3-4.
In the men's javelin competition, Demon junior
Collin Milton, who has three of the top six throws in the conference, was second Friday with a 195-7 mark, a shade under nine feet back of his season best 204-4 last week at Texas that stands second in the conference.
Colt Shankle had a season best 185-4 for third, while
De'John Garrison threw 173-7 for fourth and Josh Riggs was fifth at 169-3 for NSU.
Destiney Myers took second in the women's shot put with a 43-7 toss.
Pole vaulters
Reagan Darbonne and
Annemarie Broussard each had 13-1 clearances, outdoor personal bests for both NSU women. It was a collegiate best for Broussard, a freshman, who went 13-0 ¼ indoors, while Darbonne, a sophomore, cleared 13-2 ½ indoors this season. Broussard was third Friday and Darbonne fifth due to more misses in the competition.
Jayla Fields gave the Lady Demons third in the long jump (18-1 ½) with
Brooke Petkovich (17-4 ¾) fifth and
Monique Walker (17-2 ¾) seventh.
Freshman
Marco Arevalo threw 51-4 ½ for fourth in the men's shot put.
Isabella Hudson was fifth in the women's 3,000 meter steeplechase in 12:06.96.
Thomas Daigle ran 10:10.75 for the Demons in the men's race, also fifth.
Darius Groves finished seventh in the men's 1500 run with a 4:06.23 clocking.
Keidrick Haynes was seventh for the NSU men in the long jump at 22-5.
Saturday's schedule includes racing in the short and 400 meter hurdles, the 4x100 and 4x400 relays, and the 100, 200, 400 and 800 meters, slated to begin at 12:30, weather permitting, at Stephen F. Austin's Homer Bryce Stadium. Field events to be contested are the hammer, triple jump and high jump.
