CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The potent Northwestern State offense has experienced plenty of crossbars and posts that have kept Lady Demon shots out of the goal in Southland Conference play.
But on Sunday, NSU was on the right side of crossbar as the Lady Demons exploded for a 3-0 win at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Two of NSU's (8-8, 2-6, SLC) three goals brushed the bottom of the crossbar as the Lady Demons posted their largest conference win of the season.
Senior forward
April Trowbridge scored NSU's final two goals, one of which pinged in off the crossbar from about 35 yards in the 41
st minute for a 2-0 edge.
"That goal right before half was huge," said NSU first-year co-head coach
Jess Jobe. "We had the wind at our backs in the first half, and we talked about taking shots from distance if we had space and time because the wind is such a difficult element for a keeper.
"This team has been putting in the necessary work to get the reward, and it has been tough to look the girls in the face after these tough games. But I'm proud that they got that result with the effort and fight we had today. We bounced back well from (Friday's overtime loss to Houston Baptist).
Trowbridge's second goal came in the 64
th minute when she attacked from the left side, working around the goalkeeper Abbie Flax as she challenged Trowbridge in the box.
Fellow senior
Brittany Caserma assisted on Trowbridge's second goal as she flicked a pass from the center to the flank on a transition attack after a goal kick.
Her fourth multi-goal game of the season increased her goal total to 13, which is tied for second on the NSU all-time scoring list for a single season with Julie Zavala (2005) and Britiany Cargill (1999). Cargill owns the program record with 16 goals in 2000.
Senior
April Ficarrotta broke NSU's three-game scoreless streak in the 11
th minute when she struck a shot from more than 25 yards away. Her goal sailed above Flax's arm and grazed the bottom of the crossbar.
"We all looked at each other because Ficarrotta's goal was very similar to the one (
Jalen Donaldson) had that hit the crossbar and didn't go in (at HBU)," Jobe said. "To see that one go in, we all looked at each other in relief because we have been waiting for something to fall our way given how hard this team has worked."
NSU scored a 3-1 win against Incarnate Word on Sept. 28, but the Lady Demons had been shut out in the other five league matches, including the previous three.
The Lady Demons are still second in the league in scoring with 36 goals this season.
The Lady Demons didn't just excel on the offensive end.
Redshirt sophomore
Kayla Bomben and the back line posted its first shutout of the conference season Sunday and fourth of the season.
Bomben made three saves in the win as the defense held the Islanders to eight shots and three on goal. NSU attempted 11 shots with six on frame.
"At halftime, we talked about how dangerous a 2-0 lead is because they would have the wind at their backs in the second half," Jobe said. "Our defense did a really good job all weekend, holding each opponent scoreless for the first 90 minutes.
"That was no accident because this is what they've been putting their bodies on the line for. We're relieved because we all knew how much we needed these points.
Starting in front of Bomben were freshmen defenders
Nicole Henry,
Kalee Williams and
Hallie McCarroll with sophomore
Ashley Medawattage.
NSU won 10 games in 2016, but the Lady Demons' eight wins this season are tied for second best since NSU snatched 11 wins in 2009.
