MONROE – Junior Jasmine Juarez has patiently waited to make an impact after missing the vast majority of the 2016 season with a foot injury.

Juarez found her chance Friday, scoring the lone goal in a 1-0 win at ULM.

The Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, native fired a shot into the lower left corner from the opposite corner of the penalty box for her second goal of the season.

The goal, which was assisted by senior Esdeina Gonzalez (three assists in three matches), came in the 63rd minute after NSU (2-1) dominated possession for the majority of the match.

"The outside midfielder position is hard working up and down the line, and I just wanted to get something in," Juarez said. "I had to bring the energy up, and Ezzie had been working her butt off all game, and she had been slotting those corner balls in.

"I saw her kick it in, and I knew it was my time. I just had to place it on frame. We needed a little pick-me-up, and we're continuing to build and work toward better results in the coming weeks."

Juarez played just 25 minutes as a sophomore after a freshman season in which she scored two goals and contributed three assists.

She's on pace to graduate at the end of her junior year, wanting to compete for playing time in what is likely her final collegiate season.

"I knew I wanted to make a difference and get minutes," said Juarez, who played about 20 minutes in the second half. "Last season was really hard watching my team and not being able to help them, but I made sure I was there for all the games and at the Southland Conference Tournament cheering them on.

"I support my team in every practice, and I want to be a key player who helps their team win in every game."

NSU coach George Van Linder anticipated a close match on the road, and he's pleased with his team's response as the Lady Demons stonewalled ULM in the closing 10 minutes.

The Warhawks attempted just five shots (three on goal) as NSU logged its second shutout in as many wins.

"They did a great job responding today, and I was proud of how well we fought with 17 players seeing the field," Van Linder said. "(Juarez) doesn't always get all the playing time she wants, and she's a competitive player.

"But it's great to see her respond in a positive manner and go out and get the winner today. Defensively, we did well today with some tweaks and different position players. That's been our focus since August 1."

Senior goalkeeper Alex Latham earned her first shutout of the season with three saves.

But the NSU defenders thwarted the few opportunities ULM put together, including a trio of corner kicks with 10 minutes remaining.

Junior Ysmina Smith played a role in personally deflecting the ball away from threatening Warhawks (0-3) as NSU outshot ULM 15-5.

"We just held the pressure and moved wherever the ball was," Smith said. "Attack, attack, attack, then keep focus for 90 minutes.

"I felt like I started the season slow, but I'm starting to get back in the groove of things – getting my touch back and getting my fitness back."

The Lady Demons return home Friday to host another Sun Belt Conference member in Texas State at 7 p.m.
