Soccer falls to Ole Miss in first loss of season

OXFORD, Mississippi – The Northwestern State soccer team couldn't contend with the speed of Ole Miss on Sunday as the Rebels raced to an 8-0 win in a match televised on SEC Network Plus.

The Rebels (2-0) scored their first two goals in the opening five minutes and applied pressure throughout the match on the Lady Demons (1-1).

Rebels' freshman Channing Foster produced a hat trick, scoring two of her three goals in the first half to build a 5-0 halftime lead.

Junior CeCe Kizer added two goals and an assist.

"We were disappointed in tonight's match, and we thought we would be more composed after playing Texas A&M in the preseason," said NSU coach George Van Linder. "Everything kind of collapsed with our game plan early because of injuries, but we saw some things to build on in the second half.

"We're frustrated that we didn't put on a better performance."

Ole Miss outshot NSU 26-2 with 18 shots coming on goal.

Junior forward Brittany Caserma and freshman Gabriella Gamboa attempted NSU's shots, neither of which were on goal.

NSU senior goalkeeper Alex Latham played the first half, making seven saves with five goals allowed. One of those goals was an own goal on an Ole Miss shot that deflected off a defender to open the scoring.

Redshirt freshman Kayla Bomben stood in goal in the second half, making three saves and allowing three goals.

Twenty-three different Lady Demons saw action Sunday with all but one playing double-digit minutes.

NSU returns to action Friday at 4 p.m. when the Lady Demons head to ULM.
