NATCHITOCHES – After posting a win in the first meet of the indoor track and field season, Northwestern State's Amir James has been named the Southland Conference Track Athlete of the Week.

James won the 60 meters with a blistering time of 6.76 at LSU's Purple Tiger Invitational this past Friday.

The junior from Missouri City, Texas, was selected by the league's sports information directors.

The weekly award is his first of the season and sixth of his career.

James returns as the top indoor sprinter in the conference after sweeping the 60 and 200 meters at the most recent Southland Conference Indoor Championships.

Fellow juniors Kyrin Tucker and Gerianna Lyons were honorable mentions in the weekly field awards.

Tucker, a Coffeyville Community College (Kan.) transfer, excelled in his first time competing on the NCAA stage as he won the weight throw (57-01.50) and placed fourth in the shot put (53-02.25).

Lyons, a junior out of West Saint Mary High School, also took home a fourth-place finish in the shot put with a distance of 43-01.50.

The NSU track and field teams are set to compete again on Saturday at UAB's Vulcan Invitational in Birmingham, Alabama.
