Soccer finishes weekend with 6-0 win vs. Texas Wesleyan

SHREVEPORT – Senior midfielder Camila Ardila entered the 2016 season with a goal of becoming a more dangerous offensive threat.

Mission accomplished in the opening home weekend, although the games were played in Alexandria and Shreveport because of wet field conditions on NSU's home surface.

Ardila scored two goals Sunday in a 6-0 win against Texas Wesleyan at Shreveport's Cargill Park.

The Miami, Fla., native found the right side of the net from inside the box to give NSU (3-2) a 1-0 edge 15 minutes into the match. Her second goal was a part of a four-goal second half, scoring from close range on an Andrea Rodriguez Flores assist.

"I definitely was working on shooting because (NSU coach George Van Linder) is always telling me to short more," Ardila said. "I'm getting into position to me more of an offensive threat, and that's helped a lot.

"I am more composed this season. Especially the last goal, I would usually freak out and just try to hit it. But I composed myself on the ball, and I put it to the side (corner of the goal)."

Ardila scored three goals this weekend after one goal against Jackson State in a 3-0 decision Friday.

NSU's next two scores came by way of own goals, taking a 2-0 lead into halftime before the second own goal edged the Lady Demons ahead 3-0. In both situations, NSU players struck the ball well on goal, and a Texas Wesleyan defender kicked the ball into their own goal on deflections.

Esdeina Gonzalez, who assisted on Ardila's first goal, scored one of her own on an assist from sophomore Jacqueline Manza.

Gonzalez has a team-high three assists this season.

"We have more attackers and range at the top, so I can connect better with these girls," Gonzalez said.  "It's easier for the assists to come with our chemistry and when we have people who can finish.

"Whatever I can do to help us win, I can be a master at assisting or whatever I have to do."

Van Linder eagerly wanted to see his team put together consecutive strong performances in a weekend, and he said he was pleased with the focus on a hot Sunday.

"I'm excited for how we responded against a Texas Wesleyan team that had a good starting 11," Van Linder said. "Our depth was our best thing for us, and it paid off for us today."

The defense did its part, holding Texas Wesleyan to six shots and three on goal.

Junior goalkeeper Alex Latham (3-2) posted her third shutout this season, making three saves.

NSU put 15 of its 28 shots on frame.

The Lady Demons return to action with road trips to UTSA on Friday and Texas State on Sunday.
