HAMMOND – Highlighted by
De'Shalyn Jones posting the fastest women's 200 meter dash time this season in the Southland Conference, Northwestern State competitors posted three wins and 10 top three finishes Saturday in the Lion Invitational track and field meet hosted by Southeastern Louisiana.
With some NSU competitors taking the day off or competing in limited events or different ones on the heels of a dominant outing last week at the Leon Johnson NSU Invitational, Northwestern State still recorded 15 top five finishes.
Jones ran 23.76, a personal best, in the 200 and was edged at the finish by Alcorn State's Jasmine Robinson in 23.74. That was one of six runner-up places by NSU athletes and was the program's only season or personal best Saturday.
Winning performances for the Lady Demons came from
Por'sha Thomas in the triple jump (41-1 ¾) and
Rechelle Bessard in the discus (161-10). The Demons went 1-2 in the 100 with standouts
Amir James (10.54) and
Micah Larkins (10.58).
Other second-place finishes for NSU:
Cedric Paul in the shot put (54-8 ¾),
Emmanuel Williams in the long jump (24-1 ½),
Lawrence Wallace in the high jump (6-6 ¾) and
Braneshia Payton in the women's 100 meter hurdles (14.04).
Kelsey Frank gave the Lady Demons a third-place 139-7 javelin mark.
Jacorious Jeter (46-1 ¼) and
Zhaquan Porter finished 4-5 in the men's triple jump. Other fourths for NSU came by
Erin Wrozek in the women's 1500 (4:54.12) and
Joshua Wilkins in the men's 1500 (3:59.90).
Fifth places for NSU also were provided by
Ty Shilling in the men's javelin (187-5) and
Deylon Key in the men's high jump (6-4 ¾).
The Demons' 4x400 relay squad of James, Larkins,
Gabriel White and
George Flaviano posted an apparent season-best of 3:10.18 while running away from the field in the meet's last event, but was disqualified for an exchange zone violation.
NSU has one more regular-season meet, next Saturday in Baton Rouge at the LSU Alumni Gold meet, before the May 6-8 Southland Conference Championships in Corpus Christi, Texas.
