STARKVILLE, Miss. – Northwestern State relied heavily on its pitching the past three games, but the Lady Demons revived their bats Saturday in a 6-5 win against Chattanooga.
NSU (13-5) built a 4-1 lead before Chattanooga (12-8) dropped a four-spot in the top of the sixth inning on the second day of Mississippi State's Bulldog Slamboree.
But junior
Kellye Kincannon tied the game with an RBI-double in the bottom of the sixth before speedster
Sidney Salmans scored on a MIcaela Bouvier fielder's choice to lead 6-5.
Bouvier (7-2), who exited the game during Chattanooga's four-run inning, re-entered the game in the seventh to secure the win.
The Santa Fe, Texas, native allowed four runs on four hits in 6 1-3 innings. She worked around five walks and a hit by pitch as Chattanooga stranded a total of nine runners.
Junior pitcher
Shelby Sells relieved Bouvier in the sixth inning. Sells allowed one run on four hits when she came in with the bases loaded, recording the last two outs in the inning before NSU retook the lead.
On a day when NSU wasn't its best in the circle, the bats woke up to give the Lady Demons an early boost.
Juniors
Brittney Jones and
Micayla Sorosiak hit back-to-back home runs to spark a three-run second inning, ending a five-game NSU drought without a home run. Junior
Michaela Johnson, who made her first NSU start of her career, scored on a throwing error to put NSU up 3-0.
Home runs have come in bunches for NSU this season, and it's the second time Lady Demons have hit back-to-back home runs.
Kellye Kincannon and
Brittney Jones hit consecutive long balls in the season opener against DePaul, part of four home runs in the fifth inning.
Saturday's second inning is the third time NSU has hit multiple home runs in the same inning. The home runs chased Chattanooga starter Kailey Palazzolo, who surrendered two runs on those two home runs while completing just an inning.
Chattanooga's Jordan Fortel (2-3) took the loss, giving up four runs (three earned) on seven hits in five innings.
The Mocs cut NSU's lead to 3-1 in the fourth inning when Criket Blanco hit a solo home run, but NSU got the run back in the bottom of the fifth inning off Fortel.
Sorosiak drove in
Jordan Rains on a single for a 4-1 edge, and Sorosiak finished with two RBIs on 2-for-4 hitting. Jones (2-for-3 with a walk) also had multiple hits as NSU totaled nine.
NSU coach
Donald Pickett coached under Chattanooga's Frank Reed for eight seasons at Chattanooga State and Chattanooga. The matchup is the first between Pickett and his former boss.
NSU will play Western Kentucky today at 6 p.m.
