Natalie Landry spearheaded the Northwestern State attack with four RBIs on a 3-for-4 day in Saturday night's win 8-2 win against Western Kentucky.
Landry, who didn't play in NSU's previous two games, delivered a two-RBI double in the third inning and a two-RBI single in the seventh inning to account for half of NSU's runs.
The four RBIs ties a career high that she's matched three other times.
"Landry did really well, and she responded like we needed her to," said NSU coach
Donald Pickett. "We challenged her, and she had good at-bats and pushed runs across the plate.
"We had good at-bats all through the lineup."
NSU (14-5) got off to a quick start with two-first inning runs, chasing starter Hannah Parker after the frame.
Junior
Brittney Jones supplied the runs with a two-run home run, homering in each of Saturday's games to increase her season total to four.
Jordan Rains (1-for-3) scored on Jones' home run and reached base twice.
Landry's fourth-inning runs came against reliever Kelsey Jernigan (0-4), who allowed two runs on four hits in 4 1-3 innings. NSU had a 4-0 lead after Jones (2-for-2, two RBIs and two walks) and junior
Micayla Sorosiak (2-for-4, two run scored) crossed the plate on Landry's double.
With a 4-1 lead in the seventh inning, NSU exploded for four runs off reliever Bryce Holmgren.
Sophomore
Micaela Bouvier singled in a run before Landry plated two more. Sophomore
Hailee Rhodes drove in the final run with a sacrifice fly to score Landry.
Junior pitcher
Shelby Sells (5-3) had a quality outing, allowing two runs on five hits with five walks and five strikeouts. Sells stranded nine WKU runners as worked around base runners in most innings.
"Sells did a good job even though she got behind in the count a few times," Pickett said. "She maybe had a few more walks than we would like, but WKU has a great offense.
"She worked hard, throwing horizontal pitches throughout the game to challenge them."
WKU fell to 7-9 on the season.
NSU wraps up the tournament Sunday with a 9 a.m. rematch against Longwood, who topped the Lady Demons 2-1 on Friday.
