Box Score SAN MARCOS, TEXAS -- After Northwestern State softball scored all its runs in one inning in its early win, the Lady Demons spread the offensive firepower across the board in a 9-3 win against Oklahoma State in Texas State's CenturyLink Classic.
Junior
Kellye Kincannon drove in five runs thanks to a three-run home run (fourth inning) and a two-run triple (seventh inning) as part of a 3-for-5 effort. Kincannon's seventh inning triple salted away the win after sophomore
Sidney Salmans (walk) and sophomore Hailey Rhodes (single) reached base with two outs. NSU (2-0) beat DePaul of the Big East Conference earlier Friday.
Oklahoma State threatened with two sixth-inning runs (Madi Sue Montgomery home run) to cut NSU's lead to 6-3 before bringing the tying run to the plate. But NSU sophomore pitcher MIcaela Bouvier (1-0) forced a Shianne Hughes ground out to thwart the Cowgirls' last surge.
"Whatever the situation, I know I have to throw my pitches and trust the great defense behind me," Bouvier said. "I have so much confidence in them that I just threw the ball and let them get the outs.
"I was confident tonight against a Big 12 opponent, and I worked so hard for this that I had to just put it all out on the field."
Senior
Natalie Landry, who went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, broke a 1-1 tie in the third inning with a double off the wall.
Landry started the scoring with a solo home run in the second inning, her second of the day after hitting one against DePaul. Kincannon also homered in the 5-1 win against DePaul.
"I worked with my hitting coach before this game because I didn't like my outcome in the first game, but I got my timing down," Landry said. "I'll take this 2-0 much more than the 0-2 start last year and ended up 0-6."
Between the two season-opening games, Kincannon went 6-of-9 with two home runs and six RBIs, while Landry collected five RBIs and two home runs on a combined 3-of-7.
"We got going, and the kids were able to relax," Pickett said. "We started fast and finished strong against Oklahoma State, a good squad. Our top of the lineup got on base, and I'm really proud how we answered when OSU got close (tying run at the plate down 6-3)."
Leadoff hitter
Sidney Salmans (1-of-2 with three walks) and Haile Rhodes (2-for-4) got on base often. No. 9 hitter
Jordan Rains (2-for-4) also turned the lineup over consistently.
Bouvier (1-0) earned the complete-game win with three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
NSU moved to 2-0 all-time against Oklahoma State, also winning a 2000 matchup.
The Lady Demons return to action Saturday against host Texas State (2-0) at 12:30 p.m. and Abilene Christian (0-2) at 5 p.m. NSU closes the tournament Sunday at 10 a.m. against DePaul.
