Power-packed offense leads NSU to another sweep at JSU Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 JACKSON, Miss. – A little time was all Northwestern State's softball team needed to unleash its veteran-laden offense.

Through the first three days of the Jackson State Tournament, it is clear the Lady Demons' lineup is clicking.

For the second straight day, the Lady Demons used their offense to fashion a sweep, as Northwestern State stretched its winning streak to six games Saturday by defeating Belmont, 10-3, and Morehead State, 10-5.

In three days in Jackson, the Lady Demons (8-8) have won five games, scoring at least six runs in four of those games.

"We're just starting to play our game," seventh-year head coach Donald Pickett said. "The kids are settling in, not trying to do too much. We had a lot of returners who are good hitters, and we knew they would do a lot of good things for us, like they've done in previous seasons."

Northwestern State rapped out 24 hits in the two games, cracking double figures in scoring for the third and fourth times this season.

After a wire-to-wire victory against Belmont in the opener, NSU found itself down 5-3 after three innings of the nightcap against Morehead State (2-7).

That changed with a two-out rally in the fourth started by a Sidney Salmans single. Salmans took second on a throwing error by Morehead State and scored on a Brittany Virgoe single before Kellye Kincannon drilled a two-run home run to NSU ahead to stay.

The offensive surge came after Skylar Cagle (2-0) entered in relief of starter Shelby Sells and collected the final out of the third inning, keeping the deficit at 5-3.

"Morehead State is a really aggressive hitting team," Pickett said. "They jumped on us early. Skylar was able to come in and hold them down and change the momentum of the game. We kept putting hits together and (quality) at-bats together. Then Kellye Kincannon hits a home run and (Micayla) Sorosiak hits a home run."

With Morehead State capable of rallying at any time, Northwestern State extended its lead with a single run in the fifth on Sorosiak's home run and added three key insurance runs in the seventh on a two-run Kaytie Proctor single and an RBI groundout by Salmans.

Kincannon finished the day 3-for-4 with three RBIS while Natalie Landry and Virgoe each went 2-for-4.

In the opener, NSU scored in five of the game's seven innings including a four-run fourth thanks to a Landry's grand slam that scored  Brittney Jones (fielder's choice), Cassandra Barefield (single) and Kincannon (walk).

"(Landry's grand slam) let us play loose," Pickett said. "We were able to be confident, and that's what we want to do. Natalie did a really great job opening the game up this morning."

Six Lady Demons tallied RBIs, including Virgoe who hit a two-run home run in the second, scoring Shelby Alexander who pinch ran for Baylee Shephard following her walk.

One inning later, NSU added to its lead on a Sorosiak double that scored Jones and put the Lady Demons ahead 4-1. Hailee Rhodes got into the action in the seventh, with a RBI double of her own. Two batters later, Kincannon reached on a throwing error, scoring Landry with NSU's 10th run of the game.

In the circle, Micaela Bouvier earned her third straight win, tossing 5 1-3 innings in relief of starter Skylar Cagle. Bouvier gave up two runs on four hits while striking out five.

The Lady Demons will conclude the series on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. against host Jackson State. Fans can follow @NSUDemonsSB on Twitter for all of the latest weekend updates.
