Kellye Kincannon and
Brittney Jones shined again with home runs to aid in the 6-3 Southland Conference win over Southeastern Louisiana for the Northwestern State softball team on senior day Sunday afternoon at the Lady Demon Diamond.
The Lady Demons (27-20 overall, 15-10 SLC) completed their first series sweep of the season after picking up a pair of games in Saturday's twinbill with the Lady Lions (19-29, 10-17).
The win for NSU and a loss by Sam Houston State to Stephen F. Austin placed the Lady Demons as the No. 2 seed in next week's Southland Conference Tournament at North Oak Park in Hammond. NSU will face the winner of the No. 3 seeded Bearkats versus No. 6 Central Arkansas at 6:30 Thursday evening.
Northwestern State also earned the second seed in last year's tournament, and went on to win and receive a NCAA Tournament bid.
Following the series finale, NSU honored its six graduating seniors --
Cheyenne DelaGarza,
Cali Burke,
Brianna Rodriguez,
Shenequia Abby,
Kaylee Guidry and
Tara McKenney -- for their hard work and dedication to the program.
"I'm really proud of the way the team performed today, and we'll be using this weekend's momentum heading into the tournament," said sixth-year head coach
Donald Pickett. "This is the longest winning streak we've had all season, so we're pushing to keep it going."
The Lady Demons have won four straight games.
NSU slowly built a lead with single runs in four different innings and two in the fourth.
Kincannon accounted for two of the five RBI on the day, starting in the first with a single to left field to send
Brittany Virgoe home from third.
In the second, Jones, DelaGarza and Abby loaded up the bases to bring McKenney to the plate. The Red Oak, Texas, native sent a sacrifice fly in foul territory to give Jones the chance to score.
Kincannon came through again in the third with a solo homer to right center field. The home run was her 12
th of the season.
Jones doubled down the left field line to kick off the fourth. A sacrifice bunt from DelaGarza pushed Jones to second, and she scooted home as
Micayla Sorosiak sent a sacrifice fly to right center field. McKenney stepped up next, singled to right center, stole second, and was driven home off a single up the middle from Burke.
Jones capped scoring for NSU in the fifth with her own solo home run to center field.
The Lady Lions put up three runs in the fourth off a pair of homers and an RBI double from Katie Lacour.
Shelby Sells (6-8) picked up the win in the circle after hurling five complete innings while allowing six hits and striking out five. Guidry entered in relief in the sixth, throwing two innings and kept SLU hitless and scoreless to earn her first save of the season.
Jones registered a perfect 3-for-3 performance and one RBI to lead from the plate. Kincannon followed with a 2-for-3 outing and two RBI, and Abby went 2-for-2.
