Brittney Jones' grand slam and a pair of homers from
Kellye Kincannon gave the Northwestern State softball team a pair of wins over Southland Conference foe Southeastern Louisiana Saturday afternoon, claiming game one 10-2 and game two 5-1, both at the Lady Demon Diamond.
With the wins, the Lady Demons (26-20 overall, 14-10 in the Southland) clinch a spot in next week's Southland Conference Tournament. Double-elimination style play begins on Thursday at North Oak Park on the campus of Southeastern (19-28, 10-16) in Hammond.
"We got ahead early in game one, and carried that momentum into game two to get both wins today," said sixth-year head coach
Donald Pickett. "We're looking for the sweep on Sunday, and hope to bring that into the tournament next week."
Carrying momentum from Jones' grandslam in game one,
Kellye Kincannon kept things rolling in the first inning of game two. The freshman outfielder notched a RBI-single to left center with two runners on to put NSU on the board.
Brianna Rodriguez allowed the Lady Demons to tack on two more runs with a single deep to right center for a 3-0 lead.
Kincannon sent a pair of solo home runs over the fence in the third and fifth innings, respectively, to put the Lady Demons up 5-0.
The Lady Lions picked up their lone run of the game in the seventh off a RBI-double from Brittney Tschoepe.
Kaylee Guidry (10-3) struck out a career-high nine batters and allowed five hits to claim the win in the circle.
Jones' walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the sixth gave the Lady Demons the win in game one. Leading 4-2 at the start of the inning, NSU loaded up the bases early and picked up a pair of runs off RBI-singles from Kincannon and
Brianna Rodriguez, bringing Jones to the plate.
The freshman outfielder cranked out her first grand slam of her young career with a hard shot over the left center field fence.
Trailing by one heading to the bottom of the second, Rodriguez put the Lady Demons on the board with her 44
th career double, driving in one run. Jones doubled down the left field line to push Rodriguez to third, who snuck home on a RBI-groundout from
Shenequia Abby. McKenney followed Abby with a walk, and brought up
Cali Burke. The senior second baseman notched a RBI-single to put NSU up 3-1 after two innings.
Burke aided in a single run in the fourth with a sacrifice fly and a runner on third.
Southeastern attempted to combat the two run deficit in the sixth as Megan Moore picked up a RBI-single to right center, but it wouldn't be enough with the six-run performance from NSU in the bottom of the inning.
Baylee Gray (6-5) earned the win in the circle, her fourth in a row, allowing two runs and seven hits while striking out five batters.
Kincannon led from the plate with a 5-for-7 performance and four RBI on the day, followed by Rodriguez with a 4-for-5 outing and two RBI. Jones registered at 2-for-5 and four RBI. Rodriguez dished out two doubles on the day to bring her career total to 45, ranking tied for second with Rhonda Rube '92 in the NSU career record book.
Northwestern State wraps up its regular-season on Sunday at noon against the Lady Lions, and will honor its six graduating seniors after the game.
