NSU uses late run to overcome New Orleans

Box Score NEW ORLEANS – Janelle Perez completed a three-point play after she was fouled on a circus shot that fell through to give the Northwestern State women's basketball team a comeback victory over New Orleans Saturday evening at the Lake Front Arena in Southland Conference action.
 
NSU (16-12, 9-7 Southland Conference) outscored UNO (0-26, 0-16) 29-14 in the second half to overcome an early 17-point deficit.  The Lady Demons remain in a tie for sixth place with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, who NSU defeated in the third conference game of the season.
 
The Privateers held a 24-7 lead with 11:11 left to play in the first half spurred largely by 8-point and 9-2 runs early.  UNO held 34-22 lead at halftime.
 
 Down 39-29 with 15 minutes to play, Northwestern State was able to put together 22 points and hold New Orleans to nine to finish out the ball game. Keisha Lee and Trudy Armstead each had six and Perez and Kourtney Pennywell each had five. All four players are NSU's top season scorers.
 
Armstead finished the game 14 points for her ninth-straight game with 10 or more points in a contest.  Lee had 12, Pennywell had 11 and Perez had nine points to finish the game.
 
At the 14:46 mark, Lee opened the run with two jumpers to cut the game to 39-33 and Pennywell added one to make the score 39-35.   Octavia Wilson, who finished with the game-high 17 points, hit on a jumper and layup to make it 43-35.
 
Pennywell was fouled on made layup and finished the play with a free throw to but it to five, Wilson was able to do the exact thing to push it back to eight, 46-38. 
 
Trudy Armstead scored the next four points on a layup and two made free throws.  After Ariele Davis scored on a jumper, NSU finished the game on a nine-point run.  Perez had five of the nine points.
 
Wilson missed a shot with 1:04 remaining and Chelsea Rogers secured the rebound to give NSU a possession with under a minute remaining.  Down 48-46 Janelle Perez drove the lane and put up a shot that fell through to tie it and was fouled with a chance to put the Lady Demons on top.
 
She hit the free throw and scored two more points on free throws to push the game to its final score.  
 
NSU was 19-of-48 from the field (40 percent) and 0-of-14 from 3-point range.  It was the first game of the season that the Lady Demons did not have at least one made 3-pointer.   UNO hit 39 percent from the field and 32 percent from behind the 3-point line. 
 
Presley Owens finished the game with three points and Meredith Graf had two.  Three Lady Demons (Rogers, Owens and Armstead) finished the game with six rebounds.  Lee had five, Pennywell had four, and Perez had three boards.
 
Northwestern State outrebounded New Orleans 32-29 and was able to secure 21 defensive rebounds and keep UNO from getting second-chances.  The Privateers turned the ball over 20 times that led to 22 Lady Demon points.
 
The Lady Demons finished their five-game road swing with a 3-2 record and finished their overall conference road record at 4-5.  The final two games of the regular season will be in Prather Coliseum against Central Arkansas on March 6 and Oral Roberts on March 8.
