Griffin named to the SLC All-Academic Track and Field team

NATCHITOCHES -- Northwestern State junior runner Quiana Griffin was named to the 2013 Southland Conference All-Academic Track & Field team Thursday the league office announced Thursday.
 
The Lake Charles (Barbe HS) native compiled a 3.17 grade point average along with being the anchor of the Lady Demons' third-place 4x400 relay team with a time of 3:45.36 at the Southland Outdoor Championships.
 
The team also finished fourth at the outdoor championships in the 4x100 relay with a time of 46.10.   Individually, she was the runner-up in the 40-meter dash with a 54.55 time.
 
Lamar graduate student Joe Wade and Nicholls State junior Jaimee Springer were named Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Student-Athletes of the Year.
 
The women's all-academic team consists of 31 student-athletes including 15 automatic selections while the men's squad consists of 17 student-athletes including seven automatic selections. Sam Houston State led the conference with a combined 10 student-athletes on the all-academic team while Stephen F. Austin earned seven. Central Arkansas and McNeese collected six apiece while Lamar accumulated five. Oral Roberts, Southeastern Louisiana and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi each notched a trio while Nicholls claimed two spots and Northwestern State earned one.
 
Eleven student-athletes are making at least their second appearance on their respective teams including SFA's Adam Saloom, who has landed on the men's all-academic team for the fourth time in his career.
 
The Southland Conference awards committee, which consists of one administrator from each of the 10 member universities, votes for the student-athletes of the year. The student-athlete of the year award is presented to one student-athlete who achieves excellence in both academics and athletics. All nominees shall have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale, and demonstrated athletics achievement for at least two years at the nominating institution. All-academic members earned at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale, completed at least one full academic year and participated in at least 50 percent of the school's events.
