BATON ROUGE – Out to the best start in the programs 31 seasons, the Northwestern State softball team hits the road once again as they travel to Southern University for a single game set to begin at three o'clock on Tuesday.
“This is our last contest before we start conference play,” said head coach
Donald Pickett. “We really have to make this last preseason game count.”
The Lady Demons (17-3) meet up with the Jaguars (0-19) for the seventh time in program history. NSU leads Southern 6-0 in series play.
With the 6-0 win over Louisiana Tech on Sunday, the Lady Demons made history once again as they snapped a 21-year-old program record of most wins in the first 20 games of the season, previously set in the 1990 season when NSU started at 16-4.
The Lady Demons bounced back from a tough 4-3 loss to the Lady Techsters Saturday evening to run away with the shutout.
Senior
Kylie Roos (5-0) threw a complete game in the circle as she allowed only four hits and struck out five of 25 batters faced.
The Lady Demons notched six RBI for six runs, including a solo home run by sophomore
Brittany Virgoe, her third of the weekend and fourth of the season.
Cheyenne DelaGarza led NSU as she went one-for-two and notched two RBI, followed by
Natalie Landry going two-for-three with one RBI.
Home runs were no stranger to this strong NSU team this weekend as the Lady Demons sent eight over the fence throughout the Natchitoches Historic Development District Commission Lady Demon Classic.
The Jaguars fell 14-0 to Auburn on Sunday.
Danielle Jackson leads Southern from the plate batting .250 in 48 at-bats. She has put the ball into play 12 times and notched one RBI.
From the circle, Delphia Holmes holds a 9.40 ERA and an 0-8 record in 37.1 innings. She has struck out 10 and allowed 65 hits.
The Lady Demons begin Southland Conference play this weekend when they travel to McNeese for a three-game series beginning on Saturday at two o'clock.
