NATCHITOCHES – Home runs by Brittany Virgoe, Cassandra Barefield and Natalie Landry propelled the Northwestern State softball team to an 8-2 victory and series win over Lamar Saturday afternoon in Southland Conference action.

The Lady Demons improve to 26-8 overall, 7-4 in the Southland as Lamar falls to 15-21, 6-6 in the SLC.

Coming off of a 40-minute rain delay, Virgoe cracked her first homer of the day in the fourth inning to break the 1-1 tie with the Lady Cardinals.

Barefield followed suit in the fifth as she picked up her 10th home run of the season as she led off with a shot to left field.

The sixth inning proved to be a huge one, starting with McKenney singling to the pitcher to bring up Virgoe, who wasted no time putting another homer over the left field wall, her seventh of the season.

The Anaheim, CA product is currently setting a career-best in home runs as she was unable to put any over the fence in the 2012 season.

With runners on second and third, Landry stepped up in the fifth to take her turn at a homer, sending a straight shot to center field for her fourth home run of the season, giving the Lady Demons an 8-1 advantage.

The Lady Cardinals put up a fight in the seventh and grabbed one run off of a string of walks, but were unable to combat the seven-run deficit put up by NSU.

Kaylee Guidry (8-2) picked up the win as she allowed just one hit and struck out two.

Kylie Roos threw two solid innings allowing two hits and striking out one.

“We really pulled together today to get this win,” said head coach Donald Pickett. “It was an all-around team effort, which is the way we teach the team to play.”

The Lady Demons host Southland Conference foe Central Arkansas on Saturday at four o'clock for a three game series at the Lady Demon Diamond.
