Box Score NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State's leading scorers
Keisha Lee and
Trudy Armstead led the women's basketball team to a 71-52 win over Jackson State Monday night at Prather Coliseum in non-conference action.
Armstead had 20 points, her third 20-plus point game in 2013-14, and
Keisha Lee had 19 for NSU (4-2), and both led the Lady Demons in rebounds with seven and eight, respectively. Jackson State fell to 1-6 this season.
As a team, the Northwestern State was 50-percent (28-56) from the field, including a 56-percent (14-25) mark from the floor in the first half alone. NSU led 36-18 at the break.
"We started the game as well as we could on the defensive end. I was really proud of our focus and intensity," said second-year co-head coach
Brooke Stoehr. "We played great position team defense. For whatever reason, we started the second half not with the same intensity and got a little sloppy."
Jackson State went on a 10-0 run in the second, much like NSU did to open the game.
"Some of that's a young team learning how to play after having a little success, not quite able to keep a foot on the pedal and continuing to push," said Stoehr. "Hopefully we'll have some great teaching moments from tonight."
Lee opened the game with a jumper at the 18:52 mark in the first half. In the opening 10-0 run, Lee had four points,
Chelsea Rogers had three,
Kourtney Pennywell two, and Armstead had one.
Armstead finished opening frame with five points and Lee had 14.
NSU held JSU to a 36-percent (22-61) shooting percentage for the game. Both teams hit three 3-pointers.
"I thought our kids were extremely focused and our energy was really, really good," said Stoehr.
Northwestern State outrebounded Jackson 41-33 and had 17 more defensive rebounds than the Tigers' offensive boards.
Ayanna Hardy Fuller, who NSU shutout in the first half, tied for the team-high in points for JSU. She and Dominque Brothern had 12 points. Hardy-Fuller led the Tigers in boards with seven.
Robin Richardson grabbed her first double-figure scoring game with 10 points and five rebounds.
Janelle Perez had seven points and five assists.
Beatrice Attura had six points and
Emily Spector had four.
From the free-throw line, NSU was 12-of-20 and Jackson State was 5-of-11.
The Lady Demons will return to the floor on Saturday when they travel to Arkansas and play at 7:00. The next home contest for NSU is Dec. 15 against Arkansas-Monticello.
