Houston Game Notes

NATCHITOCHES – After scoring a double-double in her first game after missing all of last season, Trudy Armstead will lead the Northwestern State women's basketball team in a home matchup against Houston at 7:00 on Wednesday.

Armstead had 27 points and 13 rebounds a 77-53 NSU (1-0) victory over Southern Arkansas on Friday.  The Cougars (0-1) come in after a 76-68 loss versus Mississippi State.

"Wednesday's going to be very big for us," said co-head coach Brooke Stoehr.  "Hopefully we'll get a big crowd and a good home court atmosphere.

"[The Cougars] are going to be long and athletic and get after us in the full-court," she said. "They've got some athletes that can get out on the perimeter and score, and like to get out and push it."

It's going to be the eighth matchup between the two programs, but the first in Prather Coliseum.  NSU leads the series 4-3, including a 67-51 loss at Houston for the Lady Demons a season ago.

Houston returns four of its five starters from a year ago, but lost its leading scorer Porsche Landry who had 15 points on NSU in 2012-13.  Yasmeen Thompson was the high-scorer last year with 18 points.

The Cougars are the first "power conference" team to come to Prather Coliseum since Alabama did in 1998.  UH is in its first year with the American Athletic Conference after spending time in the Conference-USA.

Keisha Lee also had a standout game versus SAU on Friday with 18 points and career-high in assists with five.  Janelle Perez tied her career-high with seven assists.

Jessieka Palmer was the leading scorer for UH in its loss to Mississippi State.  She has 18 points along with seven rebounds and one steal.

Tyler Gilbert had 12 points and Marissa Ashton had 10.

After the contest with Houston, the Lady Demons will have an eight-day break before they travel to Waco, Texas to play in the Athletes in Action Classic that starts on Nov. 21.  They will face Texas-San Antonio, Baylor and Savannah State in that tournament.
