CONWAY, Ark. – Nearly one year ago, Northwestern State posted one of the biggest upsets in Southland Conference play for the season when the Lady Demons upended Central Arkansas 76-72 in overtime in Conway. The Lady Demons will be looking for a repeat outcome when they visit the Sugar Bears at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon in league action.
The game will be broadcast live on the Demon Sports Network with 100.7 KZBL in Natchitoches serving as the flagship station.
NSU (4-11, 0-2) has dropped six out of its last seven games, including two straight to start the conference season. The Lady Demons are coming off an 83-69 rare home loss to Nicholls State in their last outing on Wednesday.
UCA (11-4, 1-1) was mildly upset by Stephen F. Austin on Wednesday.
The Lady Demons will once again be playing with just seven players in attempt to notch just their second win over a Division I opponent this season.
Senior guard
Jordi James has come on strong in the last two games, averaging 20 points a contest in that span, and leads the Lady Demons in scoring with a 14.3 per game average.
But the one player that has stepped her game up quite a bit lately is junior forward
Trudy Armstead who is coming off a 19 point, 16 rebound game against the Lady Colonels. In the last four games, Armstead is scoring 13 points a game while grabbing 14 rebounds a contest. And in the two conference matchups, she's hitting 53 percent of her shots from the floor, 15 points better than the 38 percent she was shooting prior to the start of league play.
The Sugar Bears, who are a perfect 8-0 in the Farris Center this season that includes wins over Alabama and Indiana, are led in scoring by all-conference center Megan Herbert's 14.9 scoring average. The junior also tops the squad in rebounding with a 10.0 per game mark.
As a team, UCA is hitting nearly 41 percent of its shots from the field and is scoring 67.6 points a game, just .3 points higher than NSU.
Saturday's game will be the 13
th meeting between the two schools with NSU holding down a 7-5 lead in the all-time series.
Following the game, NSU will return home to face Texas-San Antonio at 7 on Wednesday.
