NATCHITOCHES -- A field of 108 golfers enjoyed the Demon Hills Golf Course and the hospitality of the Don't Die Wondering XXIII scramble supporting Northwestern State Lady Demon basketball last Saturday, with the 2011 edition marked by strong scoring performances from the winning teams.
About $8,000 was raised to support Lady Demon basketball, said head coach Jennifer Graf, who expressed gratitude to all of the participants, the NSU Demon Hills staff, and the dozens of sponsors and volunteers involved with the tournament.
Winning the low gross championship, on a scorecard playoff, with an 18-under par score was the foursome of Brett Knecht, Wayne Choate, David Sparks and John Ford. They edged Daniel Page, Zach Trichell, Ty Trichell and Jim Rogers.
Rogers also played in the afternoon and was part of the third place low gross team along with Francis Deloney, Tommy Vercher and Bruce Primm.
Folding in handicap strokes, the low net division champions were Chuck Wilkes, Joe Beasley, Chuck Levy and Dr. Catherine Levy, who shot 16-under and had a net score of 23.7 under par.
Second in low net: Tim Hughes, Todd Fisher, Bobby Logan and David Breedlove, who shot 17-under and posted a 23.2-under net. Third was the group of Paul Khoury, Whit Maxey, Sid Evans and Gerald Guin, with a 14-under gross and a 21.8 net.
Deloney won the long drive contest on No. 12. Ford, Harvey Marcus and Dan Poole had the closest-to-the-hole winners on the par 3 holes.
