NATCHITOCHES - Honoring 10 seniors in a 1:30 ceremony, the Northwestern State track and field program welcomes four other Southland Conference teams including rival McNeese to the Walter Ledet Track Complex for the Demon Invitational.
Joining McNeese and NSU will be Sam Houston State, Lamar and Central Arkansas. Field events begin at 11 a.m. and running starts at 2 as the teams tune up for the May 13-15 Southland Conference Outdoor Championships hosted by Northwestern at the Ledet Complex.
Lady Demon record-holders Trecey Rew (shot put, discus), DeJon Griffin (hammer) and Andrea Warren (4x400 meter relay) are among five NSU women set for senior recognition, along with sprinters Shamaigun VanBuren and Amanda Freeman.
Dynamic quartermilers Mike Green and Mike Batts head the senior class for the Demons, along with high jumper Greg Hall, distance runner Dusty Dischler and injured thrower Morgan Redmon.
Green ranks 30th nationally with his 46.53 time in the 400 last week at LSU and anchors two of the country's top 50 relay teams, the Demons' 4x100 (33rd, 40.15 last week) and 4x400 (48th, 3:09.82).
Rew is a top 20 performer nationally in the shot put (14th, 54-1 ¼ last week) and discus (19th, 174-8). Griffin is No. 2 in the Southland in the hammer (175-0) and Rew is No. 3 (171-8).
Saturday's meet will feature 32 performers or relay teams whose marks rank in the top three in the Southland. There are 11 top three marks in the women's field, eight by Lady Demons, and 21 top three marks by the five men's teams, four by Northwestern.
Along with the matchup in the women's hammer, the men's 400 should be one of the day's compelling battles between longtime adversaries Green (first in the SLC) and Sam Houston's Darryl Hayes (second at 46.84).
