LAFAYETTE -- After sweeping team titles at the Cowboy Relays in Lake Charles last week, the Northwestern State track and field squads hope for another successful Saturday on the I-10 corridor when they line up alongside 16 schools at the annual Louisiana Classics hosted by Louisiana-Lafayette.
Competition actually begins Friday evening in the women's shot put and the 10,000 meter run with the rest of the action set to begin Saturday morning at 9 with field events before running starts at 1.
Along with host ULL, Northwestern, LSU, Mississippi State, McNeese, Southeastern Louisiana, and Louisiana-Monroe, participating schools include Alcorn State, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Dillard, Lon Morris, Loyola - New Orleans, Nicholls State, South Alabama, Southern, Tulane, and Xavier.
Northwestern posted 11 first-place finishes last week at McNeese in the outdoor season opener, seven by the Lady Demons. Nine of those 11 marks rank first this week in the Southland Conference standings as six of the league's 12 teams made their 2011 debut.
School record holder DeJon Griffin broke her own meet record in the hammer throw with a 175-0 mark. Angelica Kotun's winning 24.72 in the 200 meters tops the SLC, as did Andrea Warren's 2:19.15 in the 800 and the NSU women's 3:46.67 time in the 4x400 relay along with Chantel Bratton's 45-0 1/4 toss in the shot put.
Sprinter Mike Green set the pace for the NSU men, winning the 400 in a quick 47.33 time and anchoring the winning 4x100 relay unit to a 40.84 clocking, with both marks topping the Southland. Justin Walker repeated as the Cowboy Relays 100 meter dash king, posting an SLC-best 10.51 time. The 14.67 in the 110 meter hurdles by P.J. Bennett won at McNeese and was the league's fastest mark.
Lady Demon All-America thrower Trecey Rew won't likely start her 2011 outdoor season until next week at LSU, if then.
