Men's 4x400 relay breaks school record on final day at Mt. San Antonio College Relays

AZUSA/WALNUT, Calif.--The Northwestern State men's 4x400 relay runs its best when competing against some of the best in the country.

After breaking the school record at the Florida Relays earlier this month, the quartet did it again this time around at the Mt. San Antonio College Relays, clocking an impressive 3:04.45 to win the event, narrowly winning it over powerhouse Arkansas.

Desmond Duncan, Kason Jones, Charlie Bartholomew and Will Achee came back once again to win the event after being third after two legs. Achee ran an impressive 45.21 in his anchor leg to overcome a deficit going into the final leg to win.

That highlighted a terrific final day Saturday in California at the Bryan Clay Invitational and Mt. San Antonio College Relays.

Silet GrayEliska Zahradnickova and the men's 4x100 relay team are just part of those who made the most of their opportunities to show what they can do against top competition, as they both ran or threw to Southland Conference-leading marks on Saturday.

"It was another great weekend highlighted by our men's 4x4 winning the Mt. SAC relays meet," head coach Mike Heimerman said. "That's a phenomenal run by those four guys—another school record, which is amazing. All four relays ran really well. The throwers did well again. We had poor conditions again. There was a tailwind for the disc, and Tarajh still threw almost 54 meters, and Eliska threw a PR to win the meet, beating some big schools. La'Darion Dudley winning the men's shot and Donroy Brown getting second was impressive. Probably the highlight of the day over here at the Bryan Clay was Silet Gray running a big PR of 59 seconds in the 400 hurdles.

"Overall, it was a great weekend here in California. It's weird to say you're basically having a full team out here in California with two different meets for us to compete at, which was quite amazing. Thanks to our administration and then a couple of donors to help out with this, but it was an amazing experience for the coaching staff, and these kids work really hard."

Gray, a senior from St. Andrew, Jamaica, had the race of her life in the women's 400-meter hurdles at the Bryan Clay Invitational, running a personal-best 59.31 to finish third in the event and beat her previous best by nearly two seconds.

She moves into the top of the SLC with that time, a little more than a second ahead of second place and into the top five for individual performers at NSU all-time in the event.

While the men's 4x100 relay team and Zahradnickova already had the top mark in the Southland this season, there is always room for improvement, both doing so at Mt. San Antonio College.

In the men's 4x100, the quartet of Eddy Vu, Kalen Beavers, Antoine Evans Jr. and Keontae Gaines ran a 39.51 to best their previous best of 39.61.

Zahradnickova, on the other hand, expanded her advantage in the women's discus, tossing a personal best 172-10 to win the event.

Shakera Kirk (162-10) and Shantangelo Williams (158-2) finished fourth and seventh, respectively.

The women's team didn't do too bad either, as the group of Samari FinneyJuvonna Cornette, Dhakiya Blake and Sileena Farrell clocked a 45.60.

In the men's 100-meter dash finals, Evans ran a 10.66 to finish second.

Evans followed that up with a 21.81 in the men's 200, an event that saw the Demons have two in the top five.

Elijah Rowe (21.17) finished tied for third and Mikkel Johansson (21.20) came in fifth.

Dishaun Lamb (14.26) and Brian Fisher (14.27) both placed in the top nine in the men's 110-meter hurdles, finishing eighth and ninth, respectively.

In the men's 400-meter dash, Charlie Bartholmew ran a 46.72 to place fourth, Kason Jones (47.58) came in 18th and Mikkel Johansson (48.13) finished in 29th.

On the women's side, Dhakiya Blake placed 28th with a time of 55.59 and Kahliyah Anderson came in 40th with a 56.04.

In the field events at the Bryan Clay Invitational, in addition to Zahradnickova winning her event, Tarajh Hudson (men's discus) and La'Darion Dudley (men's shot put) followed suit.

Hudson (175-1) won the men's discus, while Dudley (57-5.5) led the Demons going 1-2 in the men's shot put, as he was followed by Donroy Brown with a throw of 56-2.5.

On the women's side, Shakera Williams (47-8) placed fifth and Ryah Dates (46-5.25) finished eighth.

Competing again in the women's javelin, Teodora Samac came in third with a throw of 154-2.

Rounding out the Bryan Clay Invitational, Victoria Byrd recorded a jump of 18-0.5 in the women's long jump.

Over at the Mt. San Antonio College Relays, the Lady Demons ran a 3:37.87 to finish ninth in the women's 4x400 relay.

"It was an overall great experience for these young men and women over the last three days that these two meets and couldn't be prouder of them and bigger things are to come down the road," Heimerman said.

Now NSU comes back to Louisiana for the LSU Alumni Gold on April 25, the second-to-last meet prior to the conference outdoor championships.
