OKLAHOMA CITY -- All-American women's thrower Trecey Rew, sophomore sprint star Justin Walker and the women's 4x400 meter relay team are the championship-caliber entries leading the way for Northwestern State in the 2011 Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships beginning Friday.
Twelve conference members will contest championships over two days and nights at the Mosier Indoor Facility on the University of Oklahoma campus. Most of Friday's running schedule will be qualifying heats for Saturday finals. The field event finals Friday are the weight throw, high jump and long jump, along with the 5000 meter run and the distance medley relay.
Rew, a native of Garland, Texas, has the top distance in the conference in both the shot put (52-6) and weight throw (59-8 1/2). Rew's shot put distance is the 23rd-best mark in the nation.
The Lady Demon 4x400 meter relay team of Constance Seibles, Consuela Lindsy, Andrea Warren and Quiana Griffin posted a time of 3:46.05 at the LSU Twilight last Friday. The team's performance ranks them No. 1 in the conference by nearly three seconds.
Walker, who ranked in the top 10 nationally in the 100 and 200 meter dashes last spring, is one of the top contenders in the 60 and 200 dashes indoors, and will run a leg on the Demons'4x400 relay team that veteran coach Leon Johnson said could finish "first to eighth, depending on how the race unfolds and how we run Saturday evening."
Lady Demon coach Mike Heimerman is expecting strong performances individually from each of the 4x400 relay team members. Seibles is the outdoor school record holder in the 200. Lindsy and Seibles are contenders in the 400. Warren and Lawanna Perkins should score and Warren could challenge for a top finish in the 800.
Other top NSU entries on the men's side include Kendal Taylor in the 400, horizontal jumpers Wayne Douglas and Chris Greer, and high jumpers Joshua Commiato and Greg Hall.
The Demons will miss talented hurdler P.J. Bennett, who was among the top-ranked entries but will miss the meet due to a death in his family.
In the women's competition, Stephen F. Austin returns in search of their third consecutive Southland indoor track and field title after scoring 151 points last year in Norman. The Texas-San Antonio men's team has won the last five Southland Indoor Championships and will be looking to tie Lamar's streak of six straight titles (1980-85).
