DALLAS – Northwestern State will be looking to build on its 10-point win over Prairie View in its last outing when the team battles SMU at 7 on Monday night.
The Lady Demons (2-4) could be catching the Mustangs (4-4) at a good time. SMU is coming off a 63-43 loss at Wichita State (a 77-49 winner over NSU in the season opener). It was the team's third straight loss and fourth defeat in the last five games.
“They (SMU) like to run the flex,” said head coach Jennifer Graf. “They'll move the ball around a lot but won't really set many picks. Then they'll just try to pound it to the basket.”
A player to look out for is senior center Christine Elliott, who stands 6-foot-2 and leads the team with 8.1 rebounds per game.
“They like to get the ball to her and let her do her thing inside,” said Graf. “She likes to shoot the ball but is also not afraid to square up and put the ball on the floor.”
The Lady Demons will go into the game without sophomore guard Jasmine Bradley who injured her knee in the early minutes of the Prairie View game. Bradley is being evaluated and is day-to-day.
Junior center Jasmine Upchurch will fill the void in the lineup and will make her fourth career start. She currently leads the team in field goal shooting (57.6 percent) and has knocked down 19 of her last 29 shots from the floor. She's coming off a 14-point game at Prairie View and is averaging 7.2 points and 5.0 rebounds per game.
Junior forward Trudy Armstead continues to lead the team in both scoring (14.5 ppg) and rebounding (7.3 rpg) and scored eight points at Prairie View –snapping a string of five straight double-digit scoring games.
Meredith Graf will be making her seventh start of the season as the junior guard tops the team in 3-point shooting at 44 percent per game while sinking just under two treys a game. She scored 11 points at Prairie View and tied a career-high with five assists.
Senior guards Ronikka Drake (8.5 ppg, 4.5 apg) and Jordi James (12.7 ppg, 4.5 rpg) will round out the starting five.
Monday's game will be the third meeting in the series and the first since the 1979-80 season where NSU won 66-63 here in Dallas. The Lady Demons won the first-ever get together by a 91-53 score in the 1976 AIAW Region Four Tournament.
