BIRMINGHAM, Ala.  – After Andrea Nedorostova and Tatiana Larina captured their doubles draw while Olga Bazhanova and Amy Williams won consolation singles titles last weekend at Alabama, the Northwestern State Lady Demon tennis team looks forward to more stout competition this weekend at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southern Regional Championships.

NSU had a quality overall performance last weekend at the 24th Annual Roberta Allison Fall Classic hosted by Alabama, belying the Lady Demons' youth with five freshman on the squad.

“Overall I was very happy. We had a couple of matches that we let slip away, where we seemed to be in control, but the level of competition was high with several Southeastern Conference teams and ACC teams there,” said second-year Lady Demon head coach Luc Godin.

“Olga had a great showing in singles, winning two out of three, beating some top players from Mississippi State and Ole Miss,” he said.

Bazhanova recovered from a 6-4, 6-3 opening loss in Flight 1 to prevail 6-1, 2-6, 11-9 over Ekaterina Iakovleva of Mississippi State and 6-3, 6-1 past Erin Stephens of Ole Miss for the conso crown.

Nedorstova/Larina won their first-round match 8-0 and followed it with a pair of 8-6 wins over tandems from Middle Tennessee and Alabama-Birmingham to claim the Flight 4 title.

“Andrea and Tatiana won a doubles flight, coming back in a couple of their matches, which was very nice and promising. Tatiana did a good job as a first-year player,” said Godin.

Williams dropped a three-set match in her opener, but recovered to prevail 6-0, 6-1 in her next match and was a 6-3, 2-6, 10-1 victory over Alex Bradley of Southern Mississippi in the Flight 9 consolation championship.

“Linda (Gamo) and Amy showed improvement, and our young class really competed well. We had our chances in a strong field,” said Godin.

“We're excited about going into another strong competition at the ITA Regionals this weekend. With a very young team, we just want to continue to compete hard and show improvement. That's our focus this fall,” he said.

NSU has two more events on the fall slate, at Southern Mississippi and North Texas.
