NATCHITOCHES — Northwestern State tennis returns to the Jack Fisher Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon for a key Southland Conference matchup against Stephen F. Austin.
Doubles play is set to begin at 1 p.m.
The Demons (9–5, 5–1) enter the weekend looking to build on another strong stretch of conference play after splitting a pair of road matches against two of the league's top teams.
NSU dropped a narrow 4–3 decision at McNeese before bouncing back with a 4–3 victory over Southeastern Louisiana, once again showing its ability to respond under pressure.
"The girls have handled adversity with a lot of character," head coach
Marcos Morelli said. "That's been a big part of our success in those close matches."
Against Southeastern,
Honoka Umeda delivered the decisive point at No. 1 singles, rallying from a set down to secure the match-clinching win.
Maria Farina and
Lolita Hukasian provided dominant straight-set victories early in singles play, helping shift momentum after the Lady Demons dropped the doubles point.
Morelli pointed to Umeda's performance as a reflection of her leadership.
"She showed great leadership and character," Morelli said. "She's been working on staying focused and finding her best level throughout the match."
The weekend once again highlighted the team's depth and composure in tight matches, with multiple players stepping up across the lineup.
Saturday's matchup presents both a challenge and a familiar storyline.
SFA (6–7, 4–2) is coming off a home non-conference win over Georgia Southern. Before that, it had a split weekend in Southland play, defeating Southeastern 5–2 before falling to McNeese 5–2 in Lake Charles.
The Ladyjacks are led by the strong duo of Sonja Rooth and Ksenia Mamontova.
Rooth holds a 9–3 overall record and is 4–1 at the No. 2 singles position. She was named Southland Conference Player of the Week on Feb. 24.
Mamontova has been equally impressive, compiling a 6–2 record overall while going a perfect 4–0 at the No. 3 position. She enters the weekend on a six-match winning streak and was named SLC Player of the Week on March 17.
Morelli knows the matchup will present another significant test.
"They're a very competitive team with a lot of talent and are very well coached," Morelli said. "We're excited to play this type of match."
The matchup also carries added significance from last season.
SFA defeated NSU 4–3 last year, a result that prevented the Demons from claiming the outright SLC regular season championship and instead forced a tie for the title.
"It's definitely an important match, and we have a lot of respect for SFA," Morelli said.
Now, NSU returns home with an opportunity to defend its court and continue its push through conference play against a familiar conference rival.
"Playing at home with our crowd is great," Morelli said. "We enjoy seeing our community out there supporting us."
