LAFAYETTE — Northwestern State tennis hits the road Wednesday for a key in-state non-conference matchup, traveling to face UL Lafayette.
The match starts with doubles, beginning at 1:30 p.m. on the Cajun Courts.
The Lady Demons (10-5, 6-1) enter the contest riding momentum after a dominant 7–0 sweep of Stephen F. Austin, a performance that showcased both resilience and depth across the lineup.
NSU set the tone early in that match by securing the doubles point in dramatic fashion.
The pairing of
Honoka Umeda and
Sofi Garcia rallied from a 3–0 deficit at the No. 1 position to win a tiebreak and clinch the point, while
Maria Farina and
Lolita Hukasian delivered a steady 6–3 win at No. 2.
Head coach
Marcos Morelli said the focus remains consistent despite the strong result.
"It is another opportunity to have good process," Morelli said.
That momentum carried into singles, where the Lady Demons controlled the match from top to bottom.
Umeda led the way with a straight-set win at No. 1, while Garcia delivered one of the most impressive performances of the day, rallying from a 5–1 deficit in the second set to secure a 6–1, 7–5 victory at No. 5. Farina clinched the match at No. 2 after bouncing back from a first-set loss, and the Lady Demons completed the sweep with wins from
Athina Grigoriadou, Martina Acebedo Bonocore and Hukasian.
Morelli credited the team's continued development and mindset in pressure moments.
"The girls are practicing hard, and listening on how to continue developing," he said.
The performance highlighted NSU's ability to respond to adversity, a trait that will be tested again on the road against a strong UL Lafayette squad.
The Ragin' Cajuns (11-4) enter Wednesday's match coming off a 4–2 loss to Texas State.
UL Lafayette has been one of the more consistent teams in the region, led by a trio of standout performers in Angelique Berrat, Ana Martinez Vaquero and Martina Della Gora.
Berrat has been dominant at the top of the lineup, holding a 10–1 record at the No. 1 position while riding an eight-match winning streak. Vaquero has posted a 9–1 overall mark, including a 7–1 record at No. 5, also on an eight-match streak, while Della Gora brings a 9–2 record into the match with a strong presence at the No. 4 spot.
Despite the challenge, Morelli emphasized a focus on internal execution rather than the opponent.
"We focus on us," he said. "We are looking forward to seeing good competitive tennis."
With both teams featuring depth and in-form players throughout the lineup, doubles play could once again prove pivotal in setting the tone early.
"Doubles help set up the tone, so it's important," Morelli said. "But the girls have shown great fight and energy regardless of what happens in doubles."
NSU aims to carry over its aggressive approach and composure from its last outing when conference play continues this weekend.
"We are expecting a tough match, in which anything can happen," Morelli said.
