Alexis Popelar

Highly decorated out of Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, Alexis Popelar joined the Northwestern State coaching staff in the fall after graduating with a bachelor’s of science in May 2013.

Popelar was named as a Josten’s Trophy Finalist, D3Hoops.com First Team All-South Region, American Southwest Conference First Team All-Conference, academic All- ASC, and four-time ASC player of the week.

Over three seasons at HSU, she played in 92 games with 78 starts for the Cowgirls and helped maintain their record as the only team in the ASC to make the conference tournament every year since its start.

Popelar ranks in the top 10 in nine career and eight single-season categories. She passed the 1,000-point mark, led the conference in scoring (18.3 ppg), free throw percentage, and set the single season record for most rebounds by a perimeter player (212).

She helped in the girls basketball camps with one-on-one coaching, by motiving young players, and monitoring players.

In the summer before she joined the NSU staff, she was an intern at D1 Sports Training.  There she created and demonstrated fitness workouts, designed six-week workout programs, and observed and shadowed head strength and conditioning coaches.

She has volunteered at Hendrick Equine Rehabilitations Opportunity Volunteer by helping disabled children and integrated therapy though horseback riding.

Popelar is a member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, American College of Sport Medicine, and is CPR and First Aid certified.

She is the daughter of David and Liz Popelar and played basketball at Pine Tree High School in Longview, Texas.  She has two younger sisters, Abbey and Audrey.  Abbey is a sophomore at Texas A&M and Audrey, who will graduate from high school in 2015, has plans to attend Texas A&M as well.
