After a successful two-year coaching stint as the top assistant for York College of Nebraska in the NAIA, Treyon “Tree” Burks enters his first year as a graduate manager with the Northwestern State men’s basketball program.
Prior to Northwestern State, Burks helped guide York College to two of its most successful seasons the program has seen in more than 20 years—combining for 40-plus wins.
In 2012-13, York wrapped up the season with a 24-9 overall record- the most wins in program history, and posted a 12-4 mark in MCAC play that culminated in their first regular-season championship. This earned the Panthers their first berth in the NAIA National Tournament, where they advanced to the Sweet 16.
The program gained national recognition as well, climbing as high as No. 15 in the NAIA polls. York was also recognized for its “Attack Basketball” style of play. The Panthers averaged 85ppg and ranked eighth in the country both years for most points per game.
Burks also helped contribute to growing the roster size at York to 50 players with JV and Varsity teams. He contributed to recruiting players from all of over the country ,including Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Canada, Senegal, Nebraska, North Carolina, New York, and Kansas.
During his two years at York College, Burks also helped coach a first-team All-American selection, seven MCAC All- Conference players, and five players who signed contracts to play professionally in Germany, Australia, and Canada.
Burks began his journey with York College competing as a guard for coach Delton Deal from 2009-2012. As a senior, he saw action in 22 games, scoring career highs of 15 and 13 points for the Panthers. Burks was awarded MCAC Scholar-Athlete Award and the Sertoma Sportsmanship Award throughout his career. He graduated cum laude and received a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education K-12, with Coaching 7-12 from York College in 2012.
A native of Jonesboro, Burks was a standout player at Jonesboro-Hodge High School from 2005-2008 where he was a two time 1st Team All-District performer and help lead JHHS to two Top 28 appearances in the LHSAA Class 2A Basketball Tournament.
Burks is pursuing a Master’s degree in Sports Administration at NSU.
