Coach Dan Bell on Anderson: "Really an invaluable member of the staff. A behind the scenes workaholic who ust really gets anything done. He's kind of our Radar O'Reilly. I don't even get sentences out of my mouth before he's finishing them and already has it done. We'd be in a lot of trouble without him around."
Teamwork is the key to a successful coaching staff. Third-year assistant coach Randy Anderson rounds out the Demon coaching team, a team that has coached together before.
Anderson worked as a volunteer assistant on Marshall University staff in 1985-86, when Demon head coach Dan Bell was a fulltime assistant and Demon assistant Robert Epps was a student assistant coach.
Before moving south to Natchitoches, in August of 1990 to rejoin Bell and Epps, Anderson led his Tolsia High School Rebels to two straight trips into West Virginia's Class AA state basketball tournament. After starting the program from the ground up in his first season as head coach and finishing with a 9-12 record. Anderson guided the Rebels to a 15-10 mark in 1988-89 and in 18-7 record in 1989-90. Demon sophomore Mark Dillon played for Anderson.
As head coach in 1986-87 at Crum (W. Va.) High, Anderson recorded an 8-14 mark, and then moved to start the program at Tolsia, where he was 42-29 in three seasons.
Anderson, 31, started his coaching career as an asssitant at Logan (W. Va. ) High from 1983-85.
July 1992, he was chosen and served as head coach of Athletes in Action's "A-Team" which spent nearly a month touring New Zealand and posted a 6-5 record against pro league foes.
He was a four-year starter at Glenville (W. Va.) State, serving as team captain for two seasons. He won the "Heart and Hustle Award" at the conference tournament as a sophomore.
A product of Ripley (W. Va.) High School, Anderson was a second-team all-state guard. He can still hit the outside shot with precision, and away from hoops, enjoys watching movies and playing golf.
