Morris Scott

Morris Scott finished his first season coaching the Northwestern State men’s basketball team as an assistant to the head coach.

Scott helped the Demons return to significant March basketball in 2019-20 as he helped a staff nurture eight newcomers, blending with a core of veterans to finish tied for fourth in the Southland Conference. NSU won its first-round SLC Tournament game before the postseason was canceled because of the COVID-19 virus.
 
Scott brings a wealth of coaching experience, including serving as Southern University’s interim head coach for the 2017-18 season after three seasons as associate head coach and three as an assistant coach.
 
Scott won 15 games as Southern’s interim head coach and reached the Southwestern Athletic Conference semifinals after a 10-8 league record.
 
He served six seasons on coach Roman Banks staff, helping the Jaguars to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances in 2013 and 2016 with one regular season SWAC title in 2013-14.
 
Scott also helped recruit and coach seven All-SWAC performers, including 2013 Louisiana College Player of the Year Derick Beltran.
 
He was hired on Southern’s staff after one season as a Grambling assistant, guiding the Tigers to their first SWAC Tournament title game in more than 20 years in 2010-11.
 
Scott spent two seasons as a Southeastern Louisiana assistant from 2007-09, where he was involved in recruiting, scouting, and player development.  
 
He spent a season as an assistant at Northwest Florida State College, where the team finished in the NJCAA top 25 rankings with a 23-5 record in 2007.
 
The Florida A&M graduate also led high school programs at Chipley High (Fla.) and Middleton High (Fla.) before coaching a top AAU program in the Florida Elite.
 
Scott was named District 2-3A Coach of the Year at Chipley High in 2006 and his team won the District 2-3A Championship.
 
As a FAMU graduate assistant, the Rattlers won an NCAA Tournament game in 2004 against Lehigh.
 
As a player, Scott was a three-time captain and an All-MEAC Tournament selection, leading the 1999 Rattlers to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.
 
He graduated from FAMU with a bachelor’s degree (2002) and a master’s degree (2005) in Education. He and his wife, Jennifer, have two sons, Trey and Carson, and a daughter, Addison.
