David Thigpen

After serving for one season as an assistant coach at his alma mater of Hendrix College, David Thigpen is in his first season as an assistant coach at Northwestern State. Thigpen was named as an assistant basketball coach and head golf coach at Northwestern in August, 1983.

Last season Thigpen served as an assistant coach for Coach Cliff Garrison at Hendrix College as that team won the Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference championship. At Northwestern Thigpen will be responsible for coaching the demon defense and will handle the majority of the administrative duties while also heading the NSU golf program.

Prior to returning to Hendrix College as an assistant coach, Thigpen taught and coached in the DeWitt (AR) School System for six years. During that period Thigpen coached all levels of boys basketball and football and also was the head coach of the girls senior high team for two years.

In DeWitt, Thigpen was responsible for the summer basketball camp for five years, ran the summer football camp for two years and organized and established the DeWitt Little League program during the summer. 

Thigpen served as the head of the social studies department at DeWitt and also coached junior high boys track for six years and senior high girls track for two years.

Thigpen graduated from DeWitt High School in 1972 after earning three varsity letters in both basketball and football and two letters in track. Thigpen was an all-district guard in basketball and earned all-district honorable mention as a quarterback and was also all-district in the high jump.

At Hendrix Thigpen earned four letters in basketball while playing both the guard and forward positions. Thigpen received his bachelor's degree from Hendrix College in 1976 and received his master's degree from Central Arkansas in 1983.
