Former Georgia State captain Gerald Howse moves from administrative graduate assistant to a position coach role in his second season on the Northwestern State coaching staff.

A year after assisting offensive coordinator Brad Smiley with the Demons running backs, Howse takes over the running backs coching role on a more permanent basis.

In his first year with the Demons, Howse helped both Jared West and Staford Anderson establish career highs in rushing yardage.

Howse spent the past two seasons coaching running backs and tight ends at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College in Miami, Oklahoma. In 2017, Howse was named the National Junior College Athletic Association’s top assistant coach.

While at Northeastern Oklahoma, Howse coached a pair of All-Americans – running back Darwin Thompson and tight end Jace Sternberger. Thompson also was named the Southwest Junior College Football Conference’s Offensive MVP.

Both Sternberger (3rd round, Green Bay) and Thompson (6th round, Kansas City) were chosen in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Tight end Jake Ross and running back Darran Williams earned All-SWJCFC honors under Howse.

Howse recruited Texas, Georgia and Tennessee for Northeastern Oklahoma while also assisting with special teams and film breakdown.

Howse spent the 2015 season as the running backs coach at Oklahoma Baptist.

He was a two-year letterman at Georgia State in 2013-14 and earned his undergraduate degree in sociology. Howse was an all-conference selection and team captain at Northeastern Oklahoma from 2010-11, earning his associate’s degree in physical education. He completed his master’s degree in sports administration from East Central University in May 2019.

Howse is an active member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and is USA weightlifting certified.Â
