Demons Unlimited Foundation Sports Medicine Support Program

Purpose of the Project:
The purpose of this proposal is to obtain funds to support the sports medicine staff, Athletic Trainers, in their quest to obtain required continuing education units (CEUs) for certification and licensure renewal. The sports

medicine staff at Northwestern State University of Louisiana (NSU) plan to use the funds provided to attend the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) Convention in June of 2018. The 2018 NATA Convention will allow all athletic trainers to receive 25 CEUs of the 50 required biannually to keep their licensure and certification.

Who Will Benefit:
The beneficiaries include three full-time Athletic Trainers and six graduate assistant Athletic Trainers at NSU. Funds for continuing education units have never been allotted for NSU

graduate assistants, but are generally allotted to graduate assistants at competing universities. Without financial assistance to receive continuing education units, graduate assistant Athletic Trainers at NSU will have to pay for these with their personal accounts. Again, continuing education units are a requirement to be a practicing Athletic Trainer in the state of Louisiana.

Impact of the Community:
NSU athletics would agree that without the dedication of the current sports medicine staff, NSU athletes' health and performance would decline. This declination would lead to losses in sport competition and ultimately a decrease in enrollment at NSU. Athletics is a large part of a university's appeal and the sports medicine staff are a necessary component of the athletics department. NSU is the focal point of the Natchitoches area and with a decline in enrollment, the community would suffer.

On-going Sustainability:

Our funding request is based upon our lack of resources for continuing education within the NSU sports medicine department. The NATA Convention provides the most current information related to sports medicine including evidence-based knowledge. The knowledge obtained at the NATA Convention will help the NSU sports medicine staff make the best medical decision for their athletes' health and performance.

If you would like to help send our nine representatives to the NATA convention in June, contact us.  All contributions are tax deductible.  The Demons Unlimited Foundation is a 501(c)3 organization.
