CURRENT DEMONS

This website has been set up to help educate our current student-athletes and their families about NCAA rules and other information they need to know in order to maintain their eligibility to compete for NSU. Below are several links and other information important to our student-athletes. It is designed to give general information about important NCAA and Southland Conference rules; however, it may not cover every question that arises. If you have any questions about the rules, please contact the Athletic Compliance Office.

NCAA Drug Testing- The NCAA randomly tests student-athletes for banned substances. If you have tested positive for an NCAA banned substance, you will lose your eligibility for a minimum of 1 year. This means you cannot participate in athletic activities at an NCAA institution during the post-season for a minimum of one calendar year following the positive drug test. You will also lose your eligibility during that time. It is important to know that combinations of some of the supplements found in smoothies or other workout drinks can combine into substances on the NCAA banned drugs list!

NCAA Gambling Statement And Policy- The NCAA defines sports wagering as placing, accepting or soliciting a wager (on a staff member's or student-athlete's own behalf or on the behalf of others) of any type with any individual or organization on any intercollegiate, amateur or professional team or contest involving any NCAA sponsored sport. Examples of sports wagering include, but are not limited to, the use of a bookmaker or parlay card; Internet sports wagering; auctions in which bids are placed on teams, individuals or contests; and pools or fantasy leagues in which an entry fee is required and there is an opportunity to win a prize. Sports wagering of any kind is strictly prohibited. [Bylaw 10.3] Student-athletes should immediately report any offer to gamble on the outcome of an athletic competition, whether directly or indirectly, Compliance Office.  Any individual seeking information or asking student-athletes to "arrange" the outcome of any athletics contest must also be reported to the Compliance Office.

Don't Bet On It

Eligibility- The NCAA says you have 5 years (or 10 semesters) to remain eligible for competition (NCAA Bylaw 14.2). The NCAA also says that you must remain in good academic standing and be enrolled in at least full-time course hours (NCAA Bylaw 14.01.2).

How Does A Scholarship Work?

Employment Of Student-Athletes- Before the student-athlete is allowed to work, a written statement must be signed by the employer, student-athlete, and the Compliance Office stating:
  • Compensation may not include any value the student-athlete has to the employer due to the student-athlete's fame or reputation.
  • The student-athlete will be paid only for work actually performed.
  • The student-athlete will be paid at a fair market value equal to that for other similar positions in the immediate area of employment.

Countable Athletically Related Activities- Countable-Athletically Related Activities (CARA) include any required activity with an athletics purpose, involving student-athletes and at the direction of, or supervised by, any member or members of an institution's coaching staff (including strength and conditioning coaches) and must be counted within the weekly and daily limitations of the sport's declared playing season. NCAA regulations limit the amount of time coaches can require a student-athlete to be involved in CARA each week.  Coaches are required to report CARA weekly to the Compliance Office and student-athletes are required to verify the accuracy of the time reported.
