2009 PRESEASON ALL-SLC SECOND TEAM
Smith is an upper-echelon defensive lineman in the Southland Conference. His experience, intelligence, leadership and productivity are proven commodities. He is strong fundamentally and will be one of the Purple Swarm's key figures. Smith was one of two current players on the interview board during the coaching selection process in December.
2008-09 Honors: NSU athletic honor roll, spring (3.00-3-45)
2008: Recorded 35 tackles in 12 games played… had three sacks and 6.5 tackles for a loss… also blocked a kick, forced a fumble, broke up a pass and had three quarterback hurries… had a season-high five stops with 1.5 tackles for a loss against Nicholls State… collected a sack against Texas A&M-Commerce, Southeastern Louisiana and McNeese State… blocked a kick against SLU. 2008 Preseason All-SLC First Team.
2007: Earned All-SLC second team honors… in 11 games, finished third on the team with seven tackles for loss... had 36 total tackles and one sack to go along with two forced fumbles, two quarterback hurries and a pass breakup... had five tackles against both Henderson State and Central Arkansas to open up the season... two tackles for loss at Sam Houston State.
2006: Played in nine games recording 25 tackles, 12 solos… had three tackles for a loss and one sack to go along with two quarterback hurries… collected a season-high five tackles at Nicholls (Oct. 21) and against Texas State (Oct. 28)… had 1 1/2 tackles for loss against Arkansas-Monticello (Sept. 30) and Texas State.
2005: Redshirted.
Smith in High School: All-District and All-Region performer as a senior while making 64 tackles with 28 assists, 7 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery, 13 quarterback hurries, and one pass breakup... listed by one service as one of the top 25 recruits in the state of Louisiana... graduated with a 3.3 grade point average... a member of the Student Leadership council, and Senior Class Representative on the Student Council.
Smith's Personal: Born Dec. 5, 1986… son of Julia and Albert Smith, Sr... one of nine children… majoring in business administration and is scheduled to graduate in December... plans to go to graduate school in sports business… full name is Albert Smith, Jr… nickname is “Big Al.”
