NACOGDOCHES, Texas—For the third consecutive season, the Northwestern State women left no doubt who the top dog in the conference is.
The Lady Demons followed up a dominant 2025 Southland Conference outdoor team title with another one in 2026, winning their third straight outdoor team title on Saturday and five out of the last six overall.
Trailing Lamar by 3.5 going into Saturday's final, NSU used its dominance on the track and women's discus to overtake the Cardinals and run away from the pack to earn the crown.
The women finished with 147.5 points and UTRGV came in second with 126 and Stephen F. Austin placed third with 122
.
The title and three school records broken highlight the final at the SLC Championships.
It could not have started a whole lot better for the Lady Demons to begin the day, as NSU had three of the top four in the women's discus.
A senior and a freshman took center stage for NSU, as senior
Shakera Kirk tossed a 167-11 to place silver, her third consecutive top-two finish in the conference meet.
"After coming back from recurring ankle injuries, it feels good," Kirk said. "It feels a little bit better to get this medal after having those injuries and coming back."
Placing right behind her was freshman
Shantangelo Williams, who smashed her previous best of 162-0 with a 167-8 to grab the bronze in her first outdoor conference meet.
While she didn't medal, Eliska Zahadnickova placed fourth with a 166-1, as the Lady Demons earned 19 points in the event.
While the discus started the day, the Speed Demons ended the day with a bang.
Two sprinters posted golds, as one broke a school record and another nearly did.
Juvonna Cornette (11.31) broke a school record in the 100-meter dash, one that had stood for eight years.
She barely beat out UTRGV's Jizzale Davis (11.42) and Cornette's teammate
Sileena Farrell, who ran a personal-best 11.44.
"To win a championship again feels great," Farrell said. "A bronze isn't what I wanted, but I was able to end my season with a PR and was able to win a team championship, and it was great to be able to celebrate that with my team."
Rushana Dwyer nearly broke the year-old school record in the 400-meter dash, running a meet-record 51.20 to claim gold. Also on the podium was
Margaret Conteh, who ran a personal-best 51.92 to take the bronze.
Kahliyah Anderson (54.60) finished fifth in the race and
Samari Finney (56.71) placed sixth.
The women finished the sprints events with a bronze in the 4x100 relay, clocking a 44.92.
The group of Dwyer, Anderson, Conteh and Finney clocked a meet record with a 3:33.41, breaking its own record from three years ago.
Dwyer nearly also made the podium in the women's 200-meter dash as well, running a personal-best 23.52. Conteh also ran a personal best with a 23.55 to finish sixth.
After breaking the school record in the 100, Cornette clocked a 24.06 to come in eighth.
On the men's side, the 4x100 relay team of
Eddy Vu,
Elijah Rowe, Antoine Evans and
Kalen Beavers posted a meet-record 39.22 to win the event and claim the third best time in program history.
While he did not win gold,
Will Achee did break his own school record in the 400-meter dash with an impressive 45.19, but was beaten out by New Orleans' Keldrick Turner, who also ran a 45.19 and beat his previous best by a second.
Charlie Bartholomew (45.65) grabbed the bronze.
Desmond Duncan (46.28) and
Kason Jones (46.43) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
Those four ran a 3:05.70 to conclude the conference championships with a gold in the 4x400 relay victory.
Also running a school record was
Dishaun Lamb, who claimed a silver in the 100-meter hurdles, running a 13.80.
Nearly making the podium was
Kalen Beavers in the 100, running a 10.30 to finish fourth.
He was followed by his twin brother
Koen Beavers with a 10.33 and
Eddy Vu with a 10.34 in fifth and sixth, respectively.
A pair of personal bests in the men's 200, led by Achee's 20.69 to place fourth. Rowe (20.82) also ran a personal best to finish sixth.
Kalen Beavers placed seventh with a 21.10.
The Demons took home the discus thanks to three-time conference field athlete of the week
Tarajh Hudson, who tossed a season-best 184-2 on his final throw.
Even though he had the gold in the bag going into the final throw of the competition, he made a statement with his season-best toss.
Seth Smith nearly made the podium, finishing fourth with a toss of 170-9.
Also narrowly missing out on the podium was
Randy Kelly, who cleared 6-11 to place fourth.
After coming back from an injury this season,
Maxwell Gautreau finished it on a high note in the men's pole vault, clearing a personal-best 15-7.75 to finish eighth.
