LUBBOCK, Texas—Another day, another school record for Northwestern State.
On day one at the Jarvis Scott Invite, it was
Will Achee in the men's 400-meter dash. This time around, it is the women's 4x400 relay team. And not only is it a school record, it is a Southland Conference record, as the quartet of
Margaret Conteh,
Rushana Dwyer,
Kahliyah Anderson and
Dhakiya Blake ran a 3:32.47.
The group finished second in the event, only to host Texas Tech, which ran a blazing 3:31.21.
Not only did it break the school and SLC mark, but it did so in resounding fashion, defeating the old mark by more than four seconds (3:36.76).
Kalen Beavers continued a sensational season with an indoor personal best, running a 20.93 in the 200-meter dash, placing fifth.
Antoine Evans also ran a season-best 21.78, placing 57
th.
In between,
Elijah Rowe finished 22
nd with a time of 21.30 and
Mikkel Johansson placed 42
nd with a time of 21.55.
On the women's side in the 200, four posted season bests, including
Silet Gray, who ran an indoor career-best 25.32 to place 83
rd.
Leading the runners who posted season bests is
Margaret Conteh, who ran a 24.18 in the event to highlight the Lady Demon runners in the open events.
Juvonna Cornette (24.29) and
Jayla Mason (25.30) also both ran season bests to place 25
th and 80
th, respectively.
Prior to dominating as part of the 4x400 relay, Blake ran a 24.77 to finish 44
th.
Samari Finney (25.51) placed 101
st and
Victoria Byrd (25.84) came in 112
th.
Over in the jumps,
Randy Kelly once again cleared 6-10.75 in the men's high jump, the third time he has cleared that height this season. That marked earned him seventh place.
Freshman phenom
Marquis Butler finished sixth in the men's triple jump, recording a leap of 49-9.25.
Over in the throws events, transfer
Donroy Brown continued his strong final collegiate season, as he tossed a season best, one of two thrown by men's throwers in the shot put.
Brown tossed a 57-5.75 to place seventh at the Jarvis Scott Open and move into third all-time among NSU performers and moving himself to the top of the conference in the event.
Not to be outdone, fellow newcomer La'Darion Dudley tossed a season-best 56-8.50 to place eighth. While Brown's throw put him first in the Southland, Dudley's toss put himself right behind Brown in second in the conference.
On the women's side in the shot put,
Ryah Dates led the Lady Demons with a 14
th-place finish, recording a throw of 45-5.
The Lady Demons occupied three of the next four spots as well, as
Shanice Hutson tossed a 45-3 to finish in 15
th.
Eliska Zahradnickova (44-2.75) and
Shakera Williams (43-8.75) placed 17
th and 18
th, respectively.
Now NSU turns its attention to the SLC Indoor Championships, which begin Feb. 25 in Birmingham, Ala., as the women aim for its fourth straight indoor team crown and the men try to win the championship after several close calls in recent years.
