PITTSBURG, Kan.—Twelve Northwestern State athletes collected personal bests in their second meet of the season at the Pittsburg State Invitational on Saturday.
Among those personal bests were veteran sprinters
Sileena Farrell and
Kalen Beavers in the 60-meter dash.
Throughout her career, Farrell has improved every single year. Often overlooked due to having some of the best sprinters in collegiate track and field on her team, she has shown the lights are not too bright for her.
"There were a lot of good performances today," head coach
Mike Heimerman said. "Sileena looked really good and all the ladies in the 60 did well. The twins did well, considering that finals race should have been called back for a false start. That's why Keontae did have a time he just sat there and the others were late reacting but still ran. They all would have ran faster.
"I think overall it was a very good day considering the last week to week and a half of training weather we had. We are looking forward to getting back to the warm weather since it only got up to 10 degrees here today."
Farrell, a senior from England, made a statement in the 60 prelims, running a personal best 7.36 to comfortably finish first in the event and earn a trip to the finals. She was joined in the finals by
Dynia Lewis (7.56) and
Juvonna Cornette, who finished fourth and fifth in the prelims, respectively.
While she didn't set another personal best in the finals, she did run a 7.42, which tied her previous personal best, to win the event. Lewis tied a personal best with a time of 7.55 to finish fourth, while Cornette (7.58) finished fifth.
On the men's side, four Demons made the 60-meter finals. Both Beavers twins reached the finals, as well as
