NATCHITOCHES—
Madison Brown took home the Southland Conference Indoor Student-Athlete of the Year, highlighting 10 Northwestern State track and field athletes on the SLC Academic All-Conference teams.
Brown leads eight women on the team, as she was joined by
Sileena Farrell,
Kalli Knott,
Dynia Lewis,
Teodora Samac,
Maygan Shaw,
Raven-Symone Jarrett and
Shakera Williams.
On the men's side, freshmen
Bruce Boon and
William Achee were named to the academic team following strong seasons both on the track and in the classroom.
Brown, who makes the academic team for the fourth consecutive season, posted a 4.0 GPA as a master's student in health and human performance with a concentration in sport administration.
The native of Natchitoches, performed just as well in the pole vault, taking home the gold medal in the indoor season to cap off a sensational career with two gold medals and two bronzes.
She was one of two women's pole vaulters to make the team, as she was joined by fellow grad student
Kalli Knott.
Like Brown, Knott took home a gold in the event, with Knott's coming in the outdoor season, clearing 12-1.5. Also like Brown, she sported a perfect 4.0 GPA, majoring in counseling with a concentration in clinical mental health counseling.
Shaw earned a spot as well, as she awaits her turn at nationals, which begins Thursday evening in the 400-meter dash.
She was the Southland Conference Women's Track Athlete of the Year in both indoor and outdoor seasons, as she took home five gold medals at the conference meet. She also broke the school record in the outdoor 400 on two occasions.
Shaw also found the podium three times in the indoor season, including breaking the school record in the 400 in the indoor season as well.
While having one of the best seasons in SLC history, she still managed to put up a 3.423 GPA in the classroom while majoring in nursing.
Shaw is also joined on the team by fellow women's sprinters
Dynia Lewis and
Sileena Farrell.
Lewis found the podium twice, once in both indoor and outdoor. In the indoor, she posted a time of 8.41 to earn the silver medal. She followed that up with a gold as a part of the 4x100 relay in the outdoor season. She sported a 3.426 GPA in general studies.
Farrell made the podium twice at the outdoor conference meet, as she claimed a silver medal in the 100-meter dash and joined Lewis with a gold in the 4x100 relay.
She also earned the bronze in the 60-meter dash at the conference meet, running a personal-best 7.42. Farrell posted a sparkling 3.913 GPA in the classroom, majoring in health and human performance.
Teodora Samac was the lone women's freshman for NSU to land a spot on the team, one of three NSU freshmen total.
Samac placed on the podium at the SLC outdoor meet in the javelin, placing third with a toss of 149-9, which helped earn her a spot at the NCAA East First Round in Jacksonville.
A health and exercise science major, she posted a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Fresh off her gold medal at the SLC outdoor meet,
Shakera Williams lands on the academic team, posting a 3.433 GPA while majoring in liberal arts.
Her 51-2.75 she threw at the SLC meet was not only a personal best but also earned her a spot at the NCAA East First Round.
Williams also found the podium at the indoor conference meet, taking home the bronze with a throw of 46-2.75.
Rounding out the women's honorees is Jarrett, who won the gold medal in the women's heptathlon, smashing the school record in the process with 5414 points, which finished more than 100 points ahead of second place in the conference this season.
She also found the podium in the open 100-meter hurdles, earning the bronze, running a 13.81.
In the classroom, she posted a 3.33 GPA, majoring in homeland security.
On the men's side in the multis, Boon earned a spot in his first year at NSU.
The native of The Netherlands, he grabbed the bronze in the decathlon, earning a podium spot by one point. He did that while dominating in the classroom, sporting a perfect 4.0.
An automatic qualifier, Achee also made it as a freshman, accumulating a 3.806 GPA in accounting.
On the track, the sprinter won a pair of silvers in the outdoor SLC meet, earning them in the 400 and part of the 4x400 relay.
In the indoor conference meet, he came from behind to win the gold medal for the 4x400 relay team. Earlier in the indoor season, he and the 4x400 relay team broke the indoor school record, clocking a 3:09.05 at the Tyson Invitational.
