Shaw sets PR mark in winning 200m at Bobcat Invitational

SAN MARCOS/AUSTIN, Texas—Maygan Shaw proves time and time again she is one of the best runners to ever grace Northwestern State.

While she has owned the 400-meter dash, Shaw proved she is not too shabby at the 200-meter dash either. She ran a personal-best 23.42 to win the event at the Bobcat Invitational.

She is one of four Northwestern State athletes to post a top-five finish during a successful second day at the Bobcat Invitational and Texas Relays on Friday.

Randy Kelly, Roy Morris and Ryah Dates all posted top-five finishes, joining Shaw.

Shaw's 23.42 was not the only personal best earned in the 200, as Margaret Conteh ran a personal-best 24.06 to finish eighth.

To round out the Lady Demons, Samari Finney (24.72) placed 30th, Victoria Byrd (25.13) came in 39th, Tranasia Jones (25.25) placed 42nd and Kahliyah Anderson (25.79) came in 47th.

During his specialty event, the men's high jump, Kelly finished fourth in the field while Elijah Rowe finished fourth in the men's long jump and Dates earned a fifth-place finish in the women's shot put.

Kelly recorded a season-best in his event, clearing 6-11 to place fourth out of 27 competitors. Dates, on the other hand, placed fifth in the shot put with a toss of 46-5.25 out of 11 competitors.

Rowe recorded a jump of 24-3.75 to finish in fourth and Roy Morris (23-8) came in 11th place, out of 27 competitors.

Dates led a group of three Northwestern State athletes, as Shanice Hutson (45-5.75) placed seventh and Shakera Williams (43-10.5) finished ninth.

On the women's side in the long jump, Jaslyn Smith came in 11th out of 25 with a jump of 18-9.75 while Victoria Byrd (17-6.75) finished 23rd.

In the sprints, the Texas Relays began with the relays. The women ran a 46.12 in the 4x100 relay to place 26th in a loaded field out of 44. In the men's 4x400, Northwestern State  ran a 3:21.02.

If his long jump performance wasn't enough, Rowe ran a personal-best 21.39 in the men's 200 to finish 14th out of 44.

Mikkel Johansson finished right behind him in 16th place, clocking a 21.42.

Galen Loyd ran a 21.63 to come in 23rd and Desmond Duncan clocked a 21.99 to place 37th.

Raven-Symone Jarrett clocked a 14.06 in the 100-meter hurdles to finish 10th out of 57 finishers.

Robert Norton ran a personal best with a time of 54.89 to finish 25th out of 43.

In the throws events, Donovahn Watkins finished 12th in the men's hammer with a throw of 169-08. Abner Johnson placed 19th with a throw of 155-03.

Watkins also competed in the men's shot put, posting a 46-9 to finish 21st of 39.

Cherie Neal finished in the top six in two of her final three events in the women heptathlon, including a third-place finish in the javelin, where she tossed a 106-0. Overall, she finished 11th in the heptathlon.

The track & field teams are back for the final day of competition at the meets Saturday, starting with the women's hammer at 10 a.m. at the Bobcat Invitational, while the men's 4x200 starts it out at the Texas Relays at noon.
