NATCHITOCHES—Northwestern State associate head coach
Adam Pennington has gained quite the reputation as one of the nation's top assistant coaches.
It was another well-deserved honor for Pennington, as for the second consecutive season, he was named the USTFCCCA's South Central Assistant Coach of the Year for the women, announced Thursday.
The South Central Region is comprised of 39 schools, made up of schools in several different conferences, including LSU, Arkansas, Texas and Baylor.
Pennington, in his 10th year at Northwestern State, was in charge of competitors who scored 86 of the team's 117 for the Southland Conference title, the women's third consecutive indoor championship.
"To be on a list with some of our sports greatest coach's is truly an honor," Pennington said. "There are so many well coaches who deserve this award and I was blessed enough to receive it the last two years.
"I'd like to thank our administrators for continuing to support us in every way possible. I'd also like to thank Coach (Mike) Heimerman and my athletes. None of this is possible without them. Coach Heimerman is one of the best leaders in the country. And these athletes are not only special on the track but amazing young men and women who make my job easier. I am just happy to be a part of such an amazing program."
Along with three event gold medals in the 4x400 relay, 400-meter dash (
Maygan Shaw) and
Madison Brown (pole vault), the Demons went 1-2 in the pole vault at the conference meet, as Brown was followed by
Peyten Ware, who captured the silver.
Pennington has been instrumental as well in the success of
Dynia Lewis. While Lewis did not win any individual golds, she captured a silver in the 60-meter hurdles and finished fourth in the 60-meter dash, which earned her the co-newcomer of the year in the Southland Conference on the women's side.
Following a bit of a break, the Northwestern State track & field teams are back in action Saturday at the Lurline Hamilton Invitational.
