Stohler shines in finale against UIC

MOBILE, Ala. – Northwestern State received another strong outing in the circle from freshman Brooklynn Stohler, but the hot bats from Saturday did not make their way to Sunday.

Stohler threw her second complete game of the weekend and held UIC hitless for the final four innings of the game allowing just one baserunner during that stretch. The Demons bats however could not erase the three runs and four hits allowed in the first in a 3-0 loss to close the weekend.

"Brooklynn did a great job, I'm really proud of her" head coach Jenny Fuller said. "If we make a couple of plays for her the game is still tied. She really settled in and kept bearing down after those first two innings and took care of business the rest of the game."

Stohler's only hiccups on the day came within the first six outs.

With two outs and runners on first and second a high fly ball to left got lost in the clouds, falling to turf and allowing both runners to score. Stohler was faced with the same situation again in the second when a hot shot to third ricocheted off of Riley Schwisow's glove for another double that allowed one run to score.

Stohler was able to end both innings with soft contact pop ups but the damage had been done.

The freshman from Pryor, Okla., faced the minimum the rest of the way with the only baserunner, a hit batter in the fourth, immediately erased on a 1-3 double play on a caught line drive right back to the pitching circle.

After their best offensive day of the young season on Saturday, the Demon bats were left wanting in support of Stohler's effort on Sunday.

UIC pitcher Jasmine Whorley retired 10 of the first 11 batters she faced in the game, only allowing a walk to Ary Garcia Santana in the second.

Schwisow got NSU's first hit of the game on a seeing-eye single to the right side, and an ensuing fielding error put two runners on with two out, the Demon's biggest and best scoring threat of the game. A fly ball to center ended the threat keeping the Demons off the scoreboard.

The Demons struck out only two times in the game, the second fewest of the five games they played on opening weekend.

NSU hosts Memphis and Jacksonville State in Natchitoches next weekend for its first home tournament in two seasons at the newly renovated Lady Demon Diamond.
